Company

IDEAS (The Institute for Development, Evaluation, Assistance and Solutions) is a 40 year-old international non-profit with small administrative offices in Decatur, Georgia. It has operated for 30 years in Nicaragua and for decades elsewhere in Latin America. It has done consulting, projects, training and academic courses in Asia, Africa and the US as well. IDEAS has launched a couple of dozen sustainable social enterprises. These are either non-profit or for-profit and seek to accomplish the triple bottom line of financial sustainability, social change, and environmental improvement.  There are virtual volunteers and student interns who support the work of the IDEAS Latin American Office located in Nicaragua. For more on the organization and its services, see our bilingual site:  www.ideasnet.org.

In continuing its long tradition of bringing innovations to Latin America, IDEAS became a microfranchisor and launched the first microfranchise in Nicaragua, TecAp, to provide solar energy and other appropriate technology products to farmers in fair trade agricultural cooperatives and to other independent rural entrepreneurs. IDEAS has arranged financing for farmers through coops and microfinance institutions for a 2 to 4 year term that will lower annual payments sufficiently to allow low wealth members to be able to purchase solar and other appropriate technology products. IDEAS coordinates with a wide variety of other non-profits and social enterprises.

TecAp is working with low-income, rural women to become microfranchisees that are selling small solar-powered items (radios; lanterns; cell phone chargers; etc.) as well as educating their neighbors about renewable energy and assisting them to purchase larger solar systems. TecAp has trained a second set of microfranchisees who are youth installers and repairers of solar and water systems. The solar training program has provided certificates to the 76 youth that IDEAS has trained. Many of the youth now work to earn money while assisting other families who also live off the conventional electrical grid. Bilingual website: www.tecap.info.
