About Us

FII-National (FII) dba UpTogether is a national organization of individuals across the country with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities who share a passion for social justice and racial equity.  Our mission is to recognize, highlight and invest in the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of people in undervalued communities and partner with government and philanthropy to do the same.

After working with thousands of families since our founding in 2001, at UpTogether, we are certain people don’t live in poverty because they are lazy, uneducated, or mismanage money, as stereotypes would indicate. Instead, the poverty cycle, which disproportionately impacts Black and Latinx communities, can be traced to well-intentioned but inadequate governmental and charitable policies and practices that rely on a traditional top-down approach.

UpTogether’s  Strengths Based Approach (SBA) includes:

Community: We center our work around the strengths and initiatives of people living in undervalued communities and promote the role social networks within these communities play in helping people accomplish their goals and achieve long-term socioeconomic mobility.

Capital: We invest in our members with unrestricted cash in recognition of the initiatives they are taking to improve their lives.

Choice: We trust that people in undervalued communities know what’s best and are capable of making decisions for themselves and their families.

UpTogether reveals and accelerates the initiative people are taking to improve their lives.

As a community, a movement, and a platform, we use the power of information—compelling insights and personal success stories—to transform stereotypes, beliefs, practices, and policies. Together with our members, we are championing a community-led movement to boost economic and social mobility in communities that have been undervalued and underinvested in for far too long.

At UpTogether, we work towards these values:

  • Community: We honor the strengths and initiatives of people living in undervalued communities and promote the role social networks within these communities play in helping people accomplish their goals and achieve long-term socioeconomic mobility.
  • Impact: We test and scale strategies for systems adoption of a strength-based approach to accelerate socioeconomic mobility for people living at or below the poverty line in the U.S.
  • Collaboration: We center the lived experiences of families in undervalued communities and engage the knowledge, experience, and perspectives of our board, partners, and staff to build and grow a strength-based approach to end poverty.
  • Racial Equity: We are committed to being an anti-racist organization, and we promote anti-racist policies that eliminate the racial wealth divide.
  • Leadership: We acknowledge that leadership is not based on a title and honor the many forms in which it appears. We celebrate leadership that embodies all of our organizational values, driving us to act against the dominating deficit-based approach to fighting poverty.
  • Choice: We trust that people living at or below the poverty line know what’s best and are capable of making decisions for themselves and their families.

The Position

At UpTogether, we are shifting the way philanthropy and government invest in communities living with low incomes. We believe that to be able to realize our vision, we need to re-imagine and re-design how our systems work today and equip philanthropy and government to do the same. The Partnerships and Revenue team’s role is to generate earned revenue and national growth capital and to partner with philanthropy and government to adopt the practices of our strength-based approach. To be able to achieve that, we are looking for a Vice President of Partnerships & Revenue who will collaboratively lead and manage a strategy for the adoption of the strength-based approach (SBA).

We are seeking a VP who has an interest and experience in cultivating the leadership talents of a diverse team that can simultaneously build strong philanthropic and government partnerships while also disrupting paternalistic, racist,  deficit-based funding practices. Specifically, the VP will lead the management team in setting and meeting local, regional, and national revenue goals to support our core operations, including the growth of direct member payments, $50-70 million annually. The VP of Partnerships & Revenue is a member of the Executive Team and reports to the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy: Fundraising: Support the team and CEO to identify, cultivate, and secure six- and seven-figure, multi-year revenue commitments.  Lead the design and implementation of a unique, engaging yet disruptive Partnerships and Revenue strategy centered on racial equity, including collaborating internally to develop the UpTogether Community, testing and implementing a fee income structure, and building and lifting evidence for philanthropic and government adoption of SBA.
  • Movement building: Support the team in prospecting and cultivating relationships with philanthropy and government that foster collaboration within and across regions, engage local community-based movements, and center Member experience, including future goals of cross-regional and national community building movements

  • Team building and culture: Provide leadership development that ensures every team member (currently ten people and growing) feels valued for their unique talents and contributions and supported in their self-directed leadership goals. Foster a work environment that practices our organization's values and supports psychological safety and belonging within our team and across the organization.

  • Team player: As a member of the Executive Team, represent the Partnerships & Revenue team through executive-level discussions and inclusive decision-making. Work in close collaboration with technology, membership, and communications, and finance teams to ensure alignment on strategy. In particular, collaborate with the technology team on the build of the partner side of the UpTogether technology platform.
  • Consistency: Coordinate all fundraising and development efforts across the organization. Review all development systems, operations, and procedures, making improvements where necessary.
  • Operations: Oversee partnership and revenue activities, including but not limited to partner onboarding and communication, proposal writing, grant reports, narrative change projects, collateral development, and periodic reports to all funders. This also includes overseeing all back-office functions in support of the Partnerships and Revenue team (i.e., Salesforce configuration, data entry, maintenance, and reporting).

You are a good fit if you have...

  • Experience setting a vision and collaboratively leading a team to achieve strategic goals in an organized, effective manner, and a passion for hiring, developing, and retaining exceptional and diverse and BIPOC people.
  • Experience establishing and managing new partnerships, coalitions and/or movements and/or leading innovative strategies that have led to systems change within philanthropy and/or government.
  • Expertise in developing revenue forecasting (short- and long-term), preferably with ten or more years of experience in a rapidly scaling non-profit organization and experience raising six- and seven-figure grants and/or gifts.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders- excellent listener, builds trust quickly; ability to influence others to pursue a course of action.
  • Experience managing up to CEO and Board around strategy, pacing, and prioritization.
  • Strong presentation skills and experience with leading a board committee.

Compensation

This is a full-time position with a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and vacation. The salary range is $165-185K.
