The Children’s Museum of the Upstate (TCMU) is excited to announce that we are seeking an innovative Executive Director to passionately serve TCMU’s mission!  The Executive Director will be the driving force in leading and developing the team while proactively engaging the communities, community partners, members, donors and visitors of TCMU as its brand ambassador.  In providing exceptional leadership, while strategically planning with the Board of Directors, with a focus on creating and developing a welcoming, diverse and inclusive environment, the Executive Director takes a hands-on approach with daily operations and infrastructure as well as longer term sponsorship relationships, fundraising, exhibit and program development, guest services and retail expansion. 

The Children’s Museum of the Upstate’s mission is to ignite a community of compassionate problem solvers through intentional and inclusive play. With an engaging, community culture and welcoming environment, TCMU is committed to serving the needs and interests of all children by providing play-based learning opportunities at its two facilities. Established in 2009, TCMU’s Greenville location is conveniently located in the heart of the award-winning downtown area and features an 80,000 square foot facility with 21 hands-on exhibit galleries. In 2018, TCMU’s opened its Spartanburg location focusing on early childhood development for children ages 5 and under in a 6,000 square foot facility with 7 exhibit galleries.  

 

Executive Director 

The ideal candidate will be from the Upstate area, well-versed economically in the region and a multi-faceted experienced leader.  In applying their strong operational abilities, the Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors in developing and implementing a futuristic strategic plan for the organization that includes financial growth and sustainability, innovative programming, and proactive initiatives that offer fresh, relevant interactions with topics and environments that inspire and engage a diverse audience of children and caregivers. Key functions and responsibilities include:  

        Board Governance & Strategic Plan Implementation

  • Develops and implements the strategic and long- range plans for the organization as charged by the board of directors.  
  • Communicates effectively with the Board and staff, informing, in a timely and accurate manner, them of critical issues and information necessary for the Board and teams to function well, making quick and thoughtful decisions. 
  • Provides leadership and input for each strategic and tactical implementation process. Coach and mentor, the management team as they create solutions, implement to the larger plan and oversee museum operations. 
  • Develops and implements a system for tracking and reporting on the progress of the strategic plan implementation. 

        Financial Managing & Performance

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflects the financial condition of the organization. 
  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization with high emphasis on profitability and efficiency resulting in reaching financial goals. 

        Fundraising & Member/Donor Relations

  • Establishes and executes an effective fundraising strategy that supports the operations and long-term financial goals of the organization. 
  • Manages and cultivates existing relationships with donors, foundations, and sponsors to secure and expand recurring revenue streams. 
  • Expands relationships and influence with city, county, and state legislative champions. 
  • Execute marketing strategy to Greenville, Spartanburg and surrounding communities in addition to civic representation to grow donor, visitor, membership, outreach and community advocacy and contribution.  

       Museum Operational Leadership & Initiatives

  • Provides effective and inspiring leadership by being actively involved in all programs and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of all museum offerings, exhibits, facilities, and retail. 
  • Leads, coaches, develops, and retains TCMU’s high-performance senior management team with an emphasis on developing capacity in analysis, planning and budgeting. 
  • Increase efficiencies and consistency throughout the organization by developing and implementing standardized solutions, services, and marketing initiatives and campaigns. 
  • Develops thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas that engage and develop multi-generations. 

       Work Culture and Team Development 

  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality. 
  • Mentors and develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach through established goals with accountabilities, setting objectives to reach milestones, guide in establishing priorities while monitoring and measuring results.   

       Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)  

  • Fosters an engaging environment with multiple perspectives, different ideas and individuals that positively contribute to the uniqueness of the culture, staff, members, donors and visitors.  
  • Leads the development and implementation of targeted strategies to attract and welcome diverse employees, members and visitors to align with TCMU’s values and mission.    
  • Works with the Chief of Staff to identify generational and diversity gaps, including current or projected personnel needs, designing initiatives to expand inclusion.

 

       Background / Qualifications: 

  • B.A. in business, child development, education, or nonprofit. Graduate Degree in related field preferred. 
  • 15 years in senior leadership roles responsible for administration, programs, and strategic plan of well-run organization.   
  • Demonstrated upward career path in multi-faceted areas within business or educational disciplines. 
  • Proven experience in developing and managing a staff and professional development. 
  • Professional and confident, with positive attitude towards work and acting as ambassador of Museum’s values. 
  • Demonstrable experience handling needs of multiple stakeholders, leading cross-functional teams of 25 or more with budgets 3M+. 
  • Depth of knowledge in the non-profit or related industry. 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in fundraising, marketing, board management and community outreach. 
  • Experience with facility management and business operations. 
  • Developed project management and organizational expertise. 
  • Strategic, decisive, and innovative thinker. 
  • Personable, fair and respectful of team ideas in actively improving situations or processes. 
  • Self-mastery and collaborative in dealing with external stakeholders, guests, vendors.  
  • Influential advocate and voice of authority for staff and organization in forging a relationship with the Board, Legislative influencers, sponsors, and donors.  
  • Strong communicative skill, written and verbal.  
  • Strong quantitative bias coupled with emotional intelligence. 
  • Strong Microsoft Office products and technological acumen. 
  • Available to work evenings and weekends to include community functions and events.
