Summary of Position

The Atlanta Music Project College & Career Counselor will be responsible for supporting AMP high school students and AMP alumni with the college selection, application, and completion process. The College & Career Counselor position is part of a new branch of programming at AMP called the AMP Center for Student Leadership & Entrepreneurship.

The position of College & Career Counselor requires a unique combination of skills, including comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the college application and completion process, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multiple constituencies both within and outside of the organization. In addition, experience with the field of music education and performance and processes around audition preparation are highly valued for this position.

Graduates of AMP are attending colleges and music conservatories around the country and major in various fields. AMP, in partnership with Clayton State University, has established the AMP Endowed Scholarships at Clayton State University.

The College & Career Counselor will also be responsible for administering AMP’s college scholarship fund: The Chestnut Family College Scholarship Fund.

The successful candidate will possess an unyielding commitment to empowering youth to realize their possibilities through music. This position reports to the Atlanta Music Project’s Chief Executive Officer and works closely with program and development staff.

About the Atlanta Music Project

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project provides intensive, tuition-free music education for underserved youth right in their neighborhood. AMP’s mission is to empower underserved youth to realize their possibilities through music. In addition to after-school learning sites providing band, orchestra and choir instruction, AMP’s programs include: the AMP Academy, providing advanced musical training to AMP’s most talented and dedicated students; the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and school; and the AMP Youth Choirs & Orchestras. Programs in development include student leadership and entrepreneurship.

AMP music ensembles perform more than 50 concerts annually, performing in venues all across Atlanta, from community centers to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. AMP music ensembles have performed alongside international stars such as the Harlem Quartet,The Imani Winds, electric violinist Lindsey Stirling, pianist Terrence Wilson, soprano Alison Buchanan, rapper Lecrae, R&B singer Monica, and the Imani Winds. AMP musicians can be seen performing with rapper T.I. on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. AMP’s young musicians have successfully auditioned for Georgia All-State ensembles, the Atlanta Opera, and have concertized as far away as Los Angeles, Aspen and Mexico City. AMP is a 2019 winner of ArtsATL’s Luminary Award for Arts Education and a 2018 winner of Emory University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. In 2016 and 2017, the White House named AMP one of the top 50 after-school arts programs in the nation.

AMP’s existence is a direct result of the 2009 TED Prize, which was awarded to Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema. AMP’s co-founders were members of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

The 2021-2022 school year will hopefully be a return to normalcy with all programming held in person and our headquarters, the AMP Center for Performance & Education, reopening. With a 2021-2022 annual operating budget projected at $1.9 MM, AMP will serve 300 young musicians.

Position Responsibilities

• Understand and represent the AMP philosophies for uplifting youths, families, and communities through the pursuit of musical excellence
• Advise AMP students and families on the entire college admissions process (admissions, standardized tests, major selection, and career pathways) via regular workshops and one-on-one meetings.
• Execute and oversee the administration of AMP’s Chestnut Family College Scholarship Fund
• Maintain relationship with and provide support all for students applying to the AMP Endowed Scholarships at Clayton State University
• Maintain and develop relationships with admissions officers and faculty at post-secondary institutions relevant to AMP students
• Regularly visit post-secondary institutions relevant to AMP students
• Arrange for post-secondary institutions relevant to AMP students to visit the AMP Center
• Arrange tours and pre-audition lessons with faculty at post-secondary institutions relevant to AMP students
• In collaboration with program staff, assist students with preparation on audition recordings for college and summer program applications
• Develop and maintain cloud-based systems to track AMP students path to college enrollment
• Develop and maintain cloud-based systems to track AMP alumni path to college graduation
• Serve as a general resource and support system for AMP alumni completing college
• Lead the execution of the annual “senior send off” event
• Lead the creation and execution of regular alumni events
• Regularly host college-prep meetings with AMP students and families
• Regularly host one-on-one college prep meetings with AMP students and families
• Collaborate effectively with all AMP staff in support of AMP students’ goals for college
• Execute other administrative tasks as needed

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in education, communications, psychology, or related field
• Strong desire to help others
• Knowledge and understanding of the fields of band, orchestra and choir music
• Experience in preparing high school students in a successful application to college
• Excellent command of Google Docs, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint
• Dependable, with excellent follow-through on tasks and responsibilities
• Practices extreme ownership

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

• Master’s Degree
• College counseling certification
• Desire to work within disadvantaged, urban communities
• Public speaking experience
• Ability to inspire, work with and mentor teens and young adults
• Excellent leadership ability, interpersonal skills
• Ability to work productively both individually and in a team
• Entrepreneurial spirit

Notes:

The College & Career Counselor is a full-time, salaried position starting in August of 2021. Compensation commensurate with experience, and includes health insurance and retirement benefits. Generous vacation schedule. Successful candidate must be available as needed on evenings and weekends. Some travel for work necessary. Background check required.
