Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), a leading nonprofit, nonpartisan public health policy, research, and advocacy organization in Washington, DC, seeks a Senior Officer, Grants and Business Management, who will be a key internal leader in supporting continued growth and enhancing the organization’s financial and operations infrastructure. As a national advocate and trusted thought leader, TFAH has been a go to partner for policymakers, public health leaders, and funders on relevant and emerging public health issues and policy recommendations. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, TFAH has played a central role advocating for public health infrastructure funding, emergency preparedness, and increased investment in emerging public health issues such as obesity; the drug, alcohol, and suicide crisis; healthy aging; health equity; and the social determinants of health.

The new Senior Officer will report to the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer (EVP & COO) and be responsible for grants and contract management and financial planning across TFAH’s diverse projects and funding partners. The ideal candidate will be a forward-looking and flexible thinker with the ability to quickly gather and synthesize information for the EVP & COO, as well as senior staff and Board of Directors, to drive rigorous planning and decision-making processes. The new Senior Officer will be a seasoned manager and strategic finance and operations professional with at least 5-7 years’ experience overseeing financial and grants management in a nonprofit setting. This is a new position at Trust for America’s Health, created in light of the increasing growth of the organization’s activities and the diversity of its funding. CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILTIY

The Senior Officer, Grants and Business Management, will report to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and will provide leadership and management of the following areas to support TFAH’s continued growth and impact:

Grants & Contract Management

  • Design and implement internal systems to monitor contracts and grants, ensuring on time and quality reporting to key partners and funders.
  • Coordinate with EVP & COO and program staff in the departments to make real time adjustments to budgeting, monitoring, and reporting flow as projects evolve and scope of work develops.
  • Support development of narrative writing and synthesizing of information into concise and impactful reports for key funders and partners.
  • Analyze any key trends in requests and reporting, making real time adjustments in processes and advising executive leadership on any anticipated shifts required to ensure consistency and quality in projects and relationship management.

Financial Forecasting & Planning

  • Refine organizational systems for generating real-time financial forecasts and other financial planning tools to drive sound decision-making, support grant and contract reporting requirements, and build capacity for strategic budgeting and program review and analysis.
  • Advise the EVP & COO and President & CEO on financial sustainability planning, budget formulation and execution, grant and contract fiscal management, and other fiscal policy matters.
  • Assess and make recommendations to executive leadership on organizational financial policies and procedures and the development of systems and practices that will allow TFAH to fully capitalize on opportunities for expansion.
  • Apply current knowledge of best practices, financial strategies, and tools in the nonprofit sector to TFAH’s internal processes and procedures. Remain up to date on best practices and federal and state laws regarding nonprofit finance and administrative operations.
  • Assist in advancing a robust, reliable financial management engine to steward growth in revenue and handle the complexity that comes with a wider array of financial resources and requirements.

Organizational Management & Collaboration

  • Serve as an integral member of the Administrative team with oversight of key financial health metrics, grant and contract analysis and compliance, and reporting and accountability.
  • Provide key input as an integral team member responsible for financial oversight activities, including planning and budgeting, audit, compliance, and strategy. This includes recommending improvements to the systems in place and integrating tracking of financial outputs with programmatic outcomes using data and analytic reports.
  • Serve as a team player and collaborative contributor to TFAH’s overall mission of advancing evidenced-based public health.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • Strong financial acumen with knowledge of grants and contract processes and reporting, related financial and compliance matters, and an understanding of online systems that support grantmaking and contract workflows.
  • Experience in financial planning and management and with the intersection of finance, development, and program management for effective stewardship of resources.
  • Systems and operations leader comfortable building and revising processes and procedures to enhance organizational effectiveness and plan for strategic growth.
  • Experience in building efficient, data-informed, cost-effective programs and leveraging data for planning and managing organizational change.
  • Natural collaborator and team orientation with a seasoned professional approach that sees opportunities and solutions while identifying potential risks and areas for rigor and systems improvement. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to think logically, and pay close attention to details.
  • Demonstrated qualities of leadership, maturity, and commitment to the improvement of the public health system. Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written, and verbal) that can translate financial complexity into helpful information for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work with and manage relationships with all departments at TFAH, funders, and external partners. High level of professionalism and unconditional discretion; ability to handle highly sensitive matters and assure confidentiality at all times.
  • Experience working as an integral member of a team, sharing responsibility, project management, and associated tasks toward the accomplishment of identified goals. Ability to work independently, including appropriately identifying next steps, and in a group setting with confidence and reliability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, QuickBooks or similar accounting software, and financial management systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, accounting, organizational management, or related field, or the combined professional experience and certification to be successful in the role.
