About Liberation in a Generation (LibGen)

We define ourselves as a “national movement-support organization” because we do just that: provide support. From being thought partners for organizations as they think through and build campaigns to hosting workshops and facilitating idea-generation, we’re about bolstering efforts to win racial economic liberation and build political power. We aim to add to and reinforce local, state, and national coalitions, not assume leadership or wrestle power from the people leading them. Whether we’re advising groups on advocacy strategy or bridging movements, our grassroots relationships work is about bringing people and ideas together—and it’s about lifting each other up. Liberation in a Generation is currently incubating in PolicyLink.

Position Overview

Liberation in a Generation (LibGen) is looking for a passionate policy advocate to execute the day-to-day operations of our policy support work as the new Policy Coordinator (the Coordinator). The Coordinator will support our policy work by: assisting in the research and drafting of policy briefs, coordinating policy events, scheduling meetings, supporting the policy activities of local groups and LibGen-managed coalitions, and working closely with the Policy Director to help in the implementation of our policy agendas to deliver economic liberation to Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and low-income Asian people, in one generation. This position reports directly to the Policy Director.

The ideal candidate is familiar with policy work, and the tactics and strategies deployed in advocating for and advancing progressive policies. They will have a previous legislative/policy advocacy experience advocating or lobbying on racial, economic, and social justice issues and/or a base-building/community-organizing background around these issues. They are an effective analyst of policy who can get up to speed on issues quickly, distill complex policy information into understandable terms, and effectively manage relationships. Ideal candidates are familiar with the nuances of operating in the policy world, from the joys of advancing a policy campaign to conflict amongst allies, and everything in between.  They are interested in using their talents to push for an economy that better supports communities of color while also strengthening the ability of grassroots organizations to achieve bold transformative policy wins on racial and economic justice issues.

Role and Responsibilities

The coordinator will hold key organizational relationships, help develop our suite of policy materials, implement the work outlined through LibGen-managed coalitions, track progress to goal, and make adjustments as needed to allow LibGen to be a value add to policymakers, their staff, and external partners.

The Policy Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Director in holding, maintaining, and strengthening relationships with policymakers and other policy advocates focusing, or looking to focus, on racial economic justice work.
