Departmental Overview
The Gender Equity Resource Center is the campus center responsible for ensuring UC Berkeley's policies and practices, programs and services and overall campus climate are welcoming to the UCB LGBTQ+ and Women's communities in ways that ensure access, belonging & success. The programs of GenEq are LGBTQ+, Women, and Sexual and Relationship Violence Education.
GenEq is part of the Centers for Educational Justice and Community Engagement (EJCE). This collaborative is comprised of the Gender Equity Resource Center and Multicultural Student Development (MSD). MSD is comprised of five offices: African American Student Development (AASD), Asian Pacific American Student Development (ASASD), Chicanx/Latinx Student Development (CLSD), Multicultural Community Center (MCC) and Native American Student Development (NASD). These teams operate within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion (E&I).
Responsibilities
Program Management
• Plans, develops, and implements programs, services, activities, and strategies that promote critical dialogue and social change around gender, sexuality, multiculturalism, campus climate, and issues of equity and inclusion.
• Works with student interns, student leaders, and student groups on planning their events that advance understanding and belonging on issues related to gender & sexuality. Determines and coordinates staffing and other logistical needs. Assures issues of safety, security, and risk management are addressed. Mentors and develops student staff (on event management and procedures)
• Assesses program effectiveness and recommends changes in program content, procedures, and policies, as appropriate. Recommends the development of new activities, initiatives and programs.
• Coordinates the content, editing, and publication of GenEq newsletters, website, brochures, and publicity materials. Assists in preparing proposals for extramural funding.
• Contribute ideas and knowledge to the development of GenEq programs and initiatives.
• Assist with advising and support for undergraduate/graduate students, faculty and staff who seek assistance with concerns related to women including but not limited to: sex discrimination, sexual harassment, stalking, relationship violence, hate crimes, sexual assault and rape, overall safety concerns due to hostile climate created by violence against women and sexism as well as lesbian gay bisexual transgender concerns and needs.
• As part of GenEq Team, ensure that our space is well maintained, organized and clean.
Student Leadership Development
• Hires, trains, mentors, and supervises the work of undergraduate and graduate student coordinators and interns in close partnership with the Associate Directors and Executive Director.
• Facilitates collaborative group processes and uses innovative pedagogical models. Plans and leads workshop designed to promote students' academic success and retention, personal development, and leadership formation.
• Convenes and facilitates retreats each semester and the weekly intern meetings.
• Inform and advise student groups about LEAD center regulations, campus policies, and procedures, Interpret regulations and identify alternatives, as necessary, within the scope of authority.
• Advise student groups seeking collaboration with GenEq programs or advice on development and implementation of events and initiatives that intersect with GenEq core regarding campus services and resources, program planning, organization, leadership, funding, volunteer recruitment, delegation, etc.
• Serve as GenEq liaison to LGBTQ+ and Women student groups and LEAD Center Staff; assist these leaders with navigating university policies and procedures that govern the programs students wish to develop.
• Identify and nurture potential leaders; mentor student leaders to assure continuity and quality of lgbtq and women student groups over time and involve them in outreach and education programs.
• Provide guidance and training about administrative, organizational and leadership skills to student interns.
• Multicultural Advising Provides advice about academic and personal development resources to students engaged in ethnic specific, multicultural, and/or cross-cultural studies, programs, services, and organizations. Refers students to appropriate campus and community services.
Collaborative Relationships
• Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders, on and off campus, critical to program success. Involves serving as a liaison with other programs and organizations on campus and in community; convening and facilitating meetings.
• Promotes collaborations among various student, staff, faculty, and community constituencies with interests in social justice, equity and inclusion.
• Answer inquiries from students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community members. Provide referrals as needed.
Professional Development
• Keeps abreast of changing and evolving trends regarding LGBTQ+ and women students, multicultural education, student development and learning theories and new initiatives and thinking regarding student engagement and belonging.
Other duties as assigned, including:
• Special projects; membership in campus committees and work teams.
Required Qualifications
• Proven experience in program development, event planning, event marketing including social media and digital formats, and experience supervising student workers and leaders.
• Knowledge of the histories, theories, and practice of multiculturalism, multicultural student development and student leadership development.
• Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
• Knowledge of , experience in, or strong interest in developing initiatives and events that enhance belonging for women and LGBTQ+ communities.
• Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance students' academic and personal development, such as collaborative and student-centered teaching/learning models, small group facilitation, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
• Knowledge of trends and issues facing students from low-income, underrepresented ethnic and racialized communities particularly as they intersect with gender and/or sexuality.
• Knowledge of community, labor, youth, and/or student organizing.
• Knowledge of research methodology and design. Experience collecting and analyzing data, and generating reports.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students, staff, and faculty.
• Highly developed interpersonal and public communication skills including political acumen, social/cultural perceptiveness, conflict management, and interventions strategies.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of multicultural event planning and campus-community relations, including event design, organization, and production.
• Knowledge and experience analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions to solve problems; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Education
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of or interest in learning about the diverse on campus and extra campus resources that serve LGBTQ+ and Women.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
• Master's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
