About MVP

MVP is a best-in-class advising platform connecting progressive donors to the most effective and promising grassroots organizations in the country working at the intersection of movements, community organizing, and elections. We aim to increase investment in frontline organizations led by the most impacted communities to increase turnout among the progressive base, build long-term political power, and ultimately to transform our country at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2020 cycle, MVP successfully moved over $120 million to over 600 local groups across the country, focused in the most critical states.

Our Approach:

We are organizers, and the heart of our work is organizing donors through MVP to support local groups in order to build, sustain, and amplify their impact. We work in service of local groups, and we try to be aware at all times of the power dynamics of being a funder and to be careful about incentivizing actions that could alter an organization’s own priorities; we work hard not to impose on our partners. We are also striving to continuously scrutinize and dismantle the ways we manifest and reproduce white supremacy culture both internally and externally.

We focus on building from our assets, and taking a positive approach to growth and change that helps groups and donors to feel comfortable being vulnerable about their areas of improvement. We believe in a non-competitive, non-divisive, whole ecosystem approach; we are always seeking opportunities to support and encourage collaboration among groups and donors.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As the VP of Operations & Chief of Staff, you will build and manage the multifaceted operations, core infrastructure, systems, and organizational culture needed to achieve the programmatic goals of the organization. The Operations division includes full- and part-time staff and consultant positions and multiple internal departments including finance, human resources/people operations, systems and data, legal compliance, and other functions. The VP/CoS has both an internal role of managing the Operations team, and also an inter-departmental role of facilitating the smooth functioning of the whole MVP team and ensuring good communication, systems, and processes between MVP’s three divisions. As one of three division heads, along with Programs and Development, you will report to the Executive Director and serve as a core part of MVP’s Senior Leadership Team.

As the Vice President of Operations & Chief of Staff, you will be responsible for:

Organizational Leadership

  • Senior Leadership Team: Play an active role in collaboratively setting vision, formulating strategy, solving problems, and leading/modeling the strengthening of organizational values and culture. You will also coordinate and help ensure smooth functioning of the Senior Leadership Team.

Strategic and organizational planning: Lead planning processes, working with the Senior Leadership Team and across divisions to support and ensure implementation of plans, achievement of goals and impacts, and evaluation against key performance indicators.

Budgets and finance: Manage organizational budgeting, protocols, teamwork, and financial analysis processes. Report on budgets and finance to the Board and other stakeholders as requested by the Executive Director.

Data management: Lead the development and maintenance of excellent data management systems for all finance, human resources, fundraising, and programmatic data and records.

Administration and compliance: Manage all core administrative functions and risk management activities, ensuring legal compliance in all programs and operations, reporting, human resources and benefits policies, intellectual property, contracts, and vendor policies.

Team management: Build organizational cohesion, organize monthly full-team meetings, and facilitate regular org-wide communication. Identify cross-departmental systems, process, and communications challenges and facilitate cross-team solutions.

External relations: Represent MVP’s work and strategies in donor and philanthropic spaces and in media as appropriate.

Department Management

  • Departmental planning: Lead the creation of a strategic vision and plan for operations goals and strategies, working collaboratively with the ED, the Operations team, and other divisions. Lead the department’s budget and planning process and actively manage the budget on an ongoing basis.

Staff management: Effectively manage, support, and collaborate with a mix of full-time & part-time staff and contractors, while identifying gaps and growing the team as appropriate. Actively coach and develop your teams to achieve their goals through constructive feedback, guidance, and accountability.

Data and systems: Guide the equitable development of necessary systems, processes, and tools to better support the work of the department and ability to share information both internally and externally. Lead the analysis of MVP technology infrastructure and evaluate the next level of information technology, knowledge management, and financial systems needed to support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall.

Monitor, evaluate, and learn: Lead reflections, evaluation, reporting, and learning processes to document and assess effectiveness, both annually and in real time.

Other duties: We’re a growing organization, and responsibilities will evolve with the role and as opportunities emerge.
