Responsibilities:  The Senior Advancement Officer will lead business development strategy and resource mobilization efforts for the CDC Foundation’s non-infectious disease portfolio.  S/he will be responsible for developing fundraising strategies for a variety of public health projects, working closely with CDC colleagues to identify project ideas for philanthropic and private sector support and engagement; identifying, cultivating and soliciting six- and seven-figure gifts in support of various projects; facilitating cross-sector dialogue with the aim of building public-private partnerships; developing compelling proposals, budgets and fundraising collateral for prospective donors; and negotiating the terms of collaboration with funders. The Senior Advancement Officer’s fundraising efforts will focus primarily on corporate, philanthropic and organizational support and may include large-scale, complex projects with multiple revenue streams and/or implementing partners.  

 

The Senior Advancement Officer will report to the Associate Vice President for Advancement and serve as a key member of the Public-Private Partnership team.  S/he will work synergistically and strategically with staff across the Foundation, CDC colleagues and private-sector partners to develop proposals of mutual interest and benefit to all parties. The Senior Advancement Officer will develop and manage relationships in order to steward partners for long-term, diversified engagement with the Foundation.  Monitoring all prospect and partner contacts within his/her portfolio to ensure positive and purposeful donor relations, the Senior Advancement Officer will recommend involvement of executive staff when vital to any stage of the partnership-building process.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Cultivate existing and new relationships with partners and CDC colleagues to secure resources to support public health needs.
  2. Work with CDC employees to help develop project proposals and budgets and route project concept/ideas through CDC and the CDC Foundation
  3. Create, edit, finalize and send fundraising correspondence, proposals, budgets, agreements and stewardship materials for donors and prospects.
  4. Develop and engage in stewardship strategies to build and strengthen relationships.
  5. Maintain and document activities and key partner information in Salesforce.
  6. Become familiar with and maintain a working knowledge of, the CDC Foundation’s and CDC’s programs to use as a basis for major gift proposals; maintain a high level of knowledge about programs to discuss with and present to donors, prospects and members of the public health community.
  7. Represent the Foundation with a wide range of external constituencies, including public health and other organizations, foundations, corporations, potential donors and CDC colleagues.
  8. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of CDC Foundation and CDC priorities.
  9. Participate in staff activities, projects and assignments.
  10. Undertake other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills Necessary:

  1. Bachelor’s degree; Master's degree preferred.
  2. Minimum of five years of demonstrated fundraising or equivalent business development experience; a demonstrated leader in his/her field.
  3. Highly energetic professional with a track record of developing fundraising strategies, building donor relationships and closing gifts in the six+ figure range.
  4. Experience in public health/health care environment or funding for scientific research preferred; experience in non-infectious/non-communical diseases a plus .
  5. Excellent communication skills, and the ability to facilitate effective meetings with diverse partners.
  6. Strong project management and team building skills. 
  7. Ability to work independently and solve complex problems creatively and confidently.
  8. Executive presence with the ability to portray confidence and trust along with a professional image and demeanor.
  9. Polished written and verbal communication skills; excellent public speaker with ability to facilitate dialogue among various stakeholders in both meeting and conference call settings, imperative.
  10. Ability to manage multiple, high-intensity activities simultaneously and effectively.          
  11. A demonstrated ability to complete assignments in a timely and effective manner and deliver results under tight deadlines.
  12. Excellent computer and data management skills/proficiency in Word, Outlook and Excel required; Salesforce software experience preferred. 
  13. Willingness to travel.
  14. Adherence to the Code of Ethical Principles of the Association of Fundraising Professional (AFP) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

 

 

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

  2. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  3. Knowledge of business English, spelling and business math.
  4. Ability to work effectively with executives, staff, partners and the public.

  6. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work and with careful attention to detail.
  7. Ability to deal with others, using tact and diplomacy. 
  8. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  9. Ability to supervise, train, direct work and evaluate staff.
  10. Ability to work in a changing environment and as part of a team, taking on tasks at all levels.
  11. Ability to travel when required.
  12. Skill in using software packages, specifically Salesforce, Microsoft Word and Excel.
