Organizational Description:
Since 1997, CALICO, the Child Abuse Listening, Interviewing and Coordination Center, has served as a multidisciplinary hub, bringing together detectives, child welfare workers, prosecutors and other professionals to respond collaboratively to child abuse allegations, elicit children’s testimonies, and link children and families with vital therapeutic, medical and legal support services in Alameda County.
Our mission is to provide a supportive environment to interview children and facilitate a collaborative response to child abuse in which the needs of children take precedence. CALICO aids 500-600 toddlers, children and adolescents as well as adults with developmental disabilities annually, most of whom were sexually abused, and many of whom were physically hurt, neglected, exploited as prostitutes, or witnesses to violence in their home or community.

Position Title: Child Interview Specialist – Full-Time or Part-Time

Classification/Benefits: Full-time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt, with benefits (vacation, sick and holiday leave; group health, vision and dental insurance; matching 403b plan)

Reports To: Executive Director

Position Description: The Child Interview Specialist (CIS) conducts forensic interviews with toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities who have suffered abuse or neglect. The CIS also works within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure a coordinated, comprehensive response to abuse allegations. The CIS will be part of a forensic interviewing team. All CIS positions are part-time, and each CIS also assumes other agency responsibilities to comprise a full-time position. We are currently seeking a full-time staff member who will work part-time as a CIS and part-time assisting the Executive Director with program activities.

Responsibilities:
Forensic Interviewing & Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Conduct developmentally appropriate, non-biased forensic interviews with toddlers, children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities (following a national, research-based model)
  • Attend basic and advanced forensic interviewer trainings and stay abreast of current trends in forensic interviewing and child-abuse investigations
  • Greet families and orient children and caregivers to the center
  • Develop expertise in criminal and dependency investigations as they relate to child abuse and neglect
  • Consult with multidisciplinary team members (e.g., child welfare workers, detectives and prosecutors) before and after interviews
  • Develop expertise in Alameda County’s multi-disciplinary protocol for responding to child abuse and promote its compliance to meet the needs of children and families
  • Schedule CALICO appointments for law enforcement officers and child welfare workers and facilitate coordination across agencies
  • Maintain accurate intake and interview documentation
  • Provide crisis intervention/resource information to families of children as needed
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings, peer review meetings, and case review meetings, as requested
  • Present testimony in criminal court hearings upon subpoena
  • Consistently interact with others in a culturally competent manner
  • Rotate on-call responsibilities
  • Maintain strict confidentiality

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Passion for CALICO’s mission and comfort dealing with issues of trauma and abuse
  • Previous experience in child welfare or law enforcement with regard to child abuse reporting, investigations and response
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice and child welfare systems, child abuse and child development
  • Ability to build rapport with children of all ages and adults with developmental disabilities
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships with diverse constituents, including law enforcement officers, child welfare workers, attorneys, medical staff, victim advocates, mental health professionals and the general public
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to synthesize verbal information quickly
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work independently, prioritize, balance multiple projects and meet multiple deadlines
  • Expertise in forensic interviewing or a willingness to acquire this skill
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Knowledge of and comfort with computer applications
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Dependable transportation
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required for emergency, after-hours interviews and scheduled events
