We were established by a diverse Board and Founder’s Council to advance state and federal policies that solve the challenges people face within our health care system. Position Overview
The Director of Institutional Philanthropy position is a dynamic opportunity for a seasoned development professional who is passionate about advancing health care affordability, access, and equity to drive impact at a national organization on the forefront of change. Guided by a clear mission and strategic plan, the Director of Institutional Philanthropy will develop and implement a cohesive strategy for USofCare that encompasses foundation, institutional, corporate and hospital partnerships and will manage key relationships that are essential to organizational growth. 

In this highly collaborative role, the Director will report into the newly created position of Managing Director of Development and will contribute cross-departmentally to instill a culture of philanthropy in support of the greater organization. A strong fit will bring best-in-class interpersonal and relationship building skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, proven experience guiding a multi-year fundraising strategy, and will seamlessly balance a strategic vision with operational implementation to advance United States of Care’s mission to make affordable healthcare accessible for everyone.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • In partnership with the Managing Director and Director of Development, create and implement a multi-year fundraising plan encompassing all revenue streams – of which this position will specifically be responsible for foundations, institutions, corporate, and hospital partnerships – to yield a diverse, sustainable base of support;
    • Marry a rich knowledge of the philanthropic community with a sophisticated understanding of United States of Care’s mission, programs, history, relationships with key stakeholders, and goals to strategically map points of access to aligned funders and develop targeted and timely proposals;  In partnership with the Managing Director of Development, lead and manage a portfolio of funders including foundations, hospitals, and corporations to move them through the Solicitation Cycle Continuum; Along with the Director of Development, identify and leverage Board and Leadership Councils’ connections with priority prospects; 
  • Steward existing partnerships while proactively engaging with new funders to expand United States of Care’s network, influence, and opportunities;
  • Lead the development and cultivation of an expansive pipeline of prospective institutional funders through research and qualification;
  • Serve as a leader and connective thread through all aspects of grant strategy, solicitation, and stewardship, including creating streamlined processes for grant proposals, requests, communication, deadlines, deliverables, and reporting;
  • Maintain oversight on grant budgets and expenditures and open lines of communication with involved staff members to ensure that goals are on target; 
  • Partner with the Policy & External Affairs, Public Engagement, and Communications teams to highlight emergent opportunities and ‘wins’ in funding proposals and funder messaging;
    • Collaborate with the Director of Development to leverage corporate and institutional funder partnerships in support of marketing and sponsorship opportunities for events; 
  • Prepare the Executive Director, Managing Director of Development, and Senior Leadership for donor and prospect meetings, including the creation of tailored background research and other targeted cultivation materials; and 
  • Develop content for various types of donor engagements and edit organizational communications as needed, ensuring high quality, readability, and consistent voice in development materials.

Key Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience with increasing responsibilities and demonstrated growth; A minimum of 5 years of foundation relations and/or corporate partnerships experience, with an advanced skill set in grant writing and funding requests as part of a development team;  Experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies to create new revenue streams from institutional partners, and the ability to ensure that senior leadership and colleagues are brought along in that process;  Experience managing a portfolio of foundation, philanthropic, and/or institutional funders in the health care sector; Proven track record personally identifying and soliciting grants through relationship-driven funder cultivation and stewardship;  Ability to complete revenue projections and forecasting across assigned revenue streams; Experience in fundraising and development within the health care sector is strongly preferred but not required; and  Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G Suite and experience with fundraising CRMs.

Compensation and Location
The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $125,000 depending on location and experience.

This position is full-time and United States of Care offers a very generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403b with match, and paid time off. This position is virtual, with a preference for candidates located in Minneapolis, MN or Washington, DC.
