Summary of Position

Now more than ever, states have a critical role to play in driving our country forward. The Impact Project (TIP) does this by advancing economic and democracy policies that improve the quality of life for working- and middle-class people. We are 100% focused at the state level and we work in AZ, CO, FL, GA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NC, NM, NV, PA, VA, and WI.

TIP is looking for a bold, innovative strategist who is ready to drive our next wave of engagement work. They will apply lessons from previous public education, persuasion, and get out the vote programs, develop a theory of change for our next wave of engagement work, and work with our state teams to implement programs to test those theories.

The Director of Engagement will report to the Vice President of Advocacy and will work closely with our Director of Analytics and Directors of Communications. The position is full time and considered exempt for overtime purposes.

What You’ll Do

Create, Innovate, and Drive (80%)

  • Devise a theory for TIP’s next wave of engagement programs based on previous program results, academic research, input from our state teams and lessons from other organizations. Develop ways to build momentum for policies that we seek to advance in states, and expand the pool of voters or potential voters engaged in our programs.
  • Drive state-level campaigns with rigor and quality control, establish systems to learn in real time, evaluate program efficacy, and tailor tactics and content based on how target audiences are responding.
  • Develop a variety of recommendations that includes creating new programs in states, gifting to other organizations, and directing resources to where they are most helpful.
  • Collaborate with the VPs of Advocacy and Leadership Team to establish organization-wide planning systems for engagement work that tap into the expertise of our state teams, deliver high-impact results and push the organization to be bold, innovate and challenge the status quo.
  • Drive state-level civic engagement campaigns with rigor and quality control, establish systems to learn in real time, evaluate program efficacy and tailor tactics and content based on how target audiences are responding.
  • Lead your team’s annual budget planning process focused on delivering bold, high quality projects with innovative deliverables that clearly tie back to organizational and state goals.
  • Have your finger on the pulse of best practices, emerging strategies and tactics including state-level research and experiments being conducted by other organizations, feed that intel back to the team, and proactively coordinate or collaborate where possible to create efficiencies and partnerships.
  • Be in regular communication with other leaders in the field of voter engagement. Share learnings with TIP staff.
  • Work with the Director of Analytics to ensure all work ties back to answering key research questions identified by TIP.
  • Expand our network of peer reviewers to provide another set of eyes on our research findings.

Elevate TIP’s expertise and profile in progressive circles (15%)

  • Help build and keep informed a network of donors and national partners focused on relevant state-level work.
  • Ensure key players and donors in the progressive community are aware of TIP’s research and engagement priorities. Identify that list of players, package and disseminate our research agenda, read people in as findings emerge, and build ownership in our plans by enlisting their feedback.
  • Host briefings on our findings and ensure they are included in relevant convenings focused on learning from the previous cycle. Pull the most salient learnings from the Director of Analytics’ work, coordinate packaging with the VP of Impact and Operations, and either present yourself or prepare the appropriate spokesperson.

Keep the team informed (5%)

  • Drive internal communications with the TIP state team, ensuring staff are briefed on ongoing research and are looking ahead to how to incorporate our findings and experiments into their conversations and future work.
