The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Senior Legislative Advocate.

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a Senior Legislative Advocate who will help the network achieve its legislative and administrative campaign goals. This position plays a major role in the development of legislative policy initiatives and their passage, as well as the development of the network’s relationship with individual electeds and key Administrative offices. 

The Senior Legislative Advocate will report to the Senior Director of Mobilization and Advocacy. 

Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Legislative Advocate will:

  • Lead in the development of the vision, strategy, and plan for CPD/A network’s federal advocacy work, in collaboration with CPD/A staff and affiliates.

  • Mobilize CPD/A affiliate members to engage with federal electeds regularly.

  • Advocate on behalf of the CPD/A network and its federal agenda priorities.

  • Play a major role in the planning and implementation of CPA/A network activities to advocate, including national lobby days, congressional briefings, congressional hearings, and other key tactics needed to win campaigns.

  • Update CPD/A staff and network on Congressional actions.

  • Draft issue briefs, congressional updates, letters to Congress/the Administration and action alerts for CPD/A staff and the network position papers.

  • Plan and manage weekly federal advocacy calls.

  • Assist with the development of the content for the annual federal policy agenda.

  • Play a major role in strengthening relationships between CPD/A and federal elected and staff, as well as key Administrative offices.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have: 

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in issue campaign and organizing work, including four years of direct advocacy/lobbying in federal government;

  • Thorough understanding of the legislative process and Congressional organization and procedures;

  • Ability to advocate with Congressional members, staff, caucuses, and Administrative offices;

  • Ability to work with state-based organizations and teach grassroots members how to advocate and build relationships with elected officials;

  • Ability to design and implement Lobby Days and other tactics meant to build grassroots relationships;

  • Necessary organization and leadership to work on a variety of campaigns within a coalition of diverse partners.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a union position. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $95,000-$110,000 and category 4. The Collective Bargaining Agreement is available here.
