The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Deputy Director of Civic Engagement and Politics. 

About CPD + CPD/A:

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We seek an experienced leader who will work the Politics Team to build and strengthen CPD’s civic engagement and political program. The Deputy Director of Civic Engagement and Politics will work closely with CPD core partners to develop and execute political and civic engagement programs. A strong candidate will have experience interpreting civic engagement and political data, developing strategies and tools to assist partners in implementation of programs, and reviewing and evaluating new innovations for political mobilization and integrated voter education and engagement. This position will work with CPD/A core partners on campaign strategy, development of field programs, campaign tactics and other activities to meet campaign goals and priorities. The candidate should have some electoral field experience, effective leadership qualities, and experience working with diverse coalitions.

The Deputy Director of Civic Engagement and Politics will report to the Chief of Civic Engagement and Politics and supervise staff on the Civic Engagement and Politics Team.

Primary Responsibilities

The Deputy Director of Civic Engagement and Politics will:

  • Work closely with affiliate executive directors and political directors to build political programs that strengthen the voice of communities of color and advance a bold progressive agenda.

  • Build CPD/A’s political operation, including recruitment and management of staff, program development, development and oversight of electoral campaigns, etc.

  • Help to raise the budget for our political operations from a range of sources, including individual donors, institutional donors, and more.  

  • In the early stages of the work, this position will contribute substantially to CPD/A’s State Power Program, working with our team to help our affiliates articulate mid- to long-term power plans for their state.

  • Over time, supervise increasingly scaled projects of the Political Team, including key strategic partnerships, major electoral efforts, constituency-focused electoral organizing programs, etc.

  • Work to build CPD/A’s political operation, including recruitment and management of staff.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

  • At least 10-12 years experience in electoral, civic engagement, or political campaigns, with some relevant connection to community, labor, or other non-candidate politics;

  • Experience managing large scale or statewide issue campaigns;

  • Experience managing high and mid level staff; 

  • Familiarity with political data, latest technologies, and best practices in the field;

  • Independent and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;

  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners;

  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills;

  • Results-focused and organized;

  • Self-motivated – proven ability to work independently; and

  • Willing to have a significant travel schedule post-COVID, >2 trips a month

Salary and Benefits:

CPD/A is a unionized workplace. This is a supervisory position, not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years of experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $100,000-$115,000.  

We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
