The Role

Are you committed to using communications to build a better, more progressive future? Be Clear is seeking to hire a Director and/or Vice President to join our small but growing team. In this role, you will lead and support communications — in whole or in part — for a wide array of mission-driven organizations and leaders. You will be responsible for managing day-to-day communications for a variety of our clients, including drafting content, executing rollouts, and creating innovative strategic communications plans. The ideal candidate will share our mission-driven focus and have experience working in a fast-paced communications role for government and/or campaigns. Given the start-up nature of our small team, we are open to hiring this role at either the Director or Vice President level with the respective responsibilities and qualifications articulated below.

Be Clear

Be Clear is a communications and strategy consultancy that seeks to build a better, more progressive world by helping people and organizations tell their stories. Founded by four alumni of the Obama Administration, Be Clear works across a range of issues. Our clients fight to bring justice to education policy, to turn the tide in the fight against climate change, to reduce economic inequality, and to fundamentally reform corrections. Our services range from strategy development to press relations; from crisis management to training promising leaders for high-pressure media environments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a client-facing representative of Be Clear. That may mean managing day-to-day communications for some clients, coordinating a small team, and treating the client’s needs and hopes as your own
  • Create high-quality content, including press releases, emails, op-eds, digital content, meeting agendas, and more
  • In collaboration with Be Clear Partners, draft thoughtful strategic communications plans, including building creative communications calendars and playing a critical role in executing effective public rollouts
  • Pitch reporters and build media relationships
  • Participate in business development activities, including writing proposals and creating pitch decks

At the Vice President level, this person will have additional responsibilities, which may include being the primary relationship holder for select clients, producing client-ready content, and leading comprehensive communications planning and execution for clients and/or projects.

Qualifications

A Director at Be Clear will share our passion for working with our clients to build a better, more progressive world and have:

  • At least 5 years of professional communications experience, including some in government, campaigns, journalism or similarly fast-paced environments
  • Great judgment and interpersonal skills
  • Capacity to succeed in a dynamic work environment that frequently requires multitasking and balancing competing demands
  • Experience managing projects, planning strategic communications campaigns, and executing media rollouts
  • Significant experience pitching stories and op-eds, strong understanding of media markets, particularly in DC, California, and swing states
  • Exceptional writing, sharp critical thinking skills, expertise in writing press releases, blog posts, op-eds, and other public-facing communications
  • Willingness to build and grow reporter relationships
  • Fluency in and unwavering commitment to advancing issues of racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion

A Vice President at Be Clear will have all of the above plus:

  • Eight or more years of professional communications experience, including some in government, campaigns, journalism or similarly fast-paced environments
  • A portfolio of published written content, whether under your own name or ghost-written for others
  • A track record of successfully managing complex communications teams and projects
  • Experience leading client-facing teams and/or working extensively and directly with high-profile executives and public leaders

Additional consideration will be given for:

  • Strong reporter relationships (especially in national politics and/or education policy)
  • Experience writing speeches
  • Spanish fluency
  • Expertise in managing paid and organic digital media strategy
  • Demonstrated ability to support business development
