The Arc of Greensboro is an organization of and for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, promoting and protecting their human rights and actively supporting their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes. The Arc of Greensboro was created in 1953 as a grassroots community group of parents and other concerned stakeholders to advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of Greensboro is affiliated with a network of similar organizations at the state and national level that advocate and promote inclusive environments and opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to have choices as they live their lives in the community.

Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city and is centrally located in the state’s Piedmont Triad region. The city’s mix of schools and industry contributes to its economic and cultural diversity, attracting major sporting, arts, and cultural events. Greensboro is known as the Gate City because of the trains that made it a “gateway” to the West and South in the 1800s. With a population of 285,000, the city retains its small-town feel and is a three-hour drive to the NC mountains to the west and beaches to the east. Among its many attractions are The Greensboro Science Center that houses red pandas, sharks, and a hands-on museum; the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park with displays on the American Revolution; and The Bog Garden, a wetlands area with flowers, birds, and an elevated boardwalk. The City is widely known for its International Civil Rights Center and Museum, with exhibits and re-enactments that trace the civil rights struggle. The Greensboro Aquatic Center and the Tanger Performing Arts Center add to the vibrant mix of festivals, sporting events, cultural, and arts activities in the city.
The Position | Executive Director
The Executive Director of The Arc of Greensboro is the executive head of the organization and is responsible for providing strategic vision and managerial oversight for all facets of the organization’s administration, fiscal management, resource development, community relations, and programming. The Executive Director is hired by and responsible to the Board of Directors and supervises and works with all full-time, part-time, and contractual employees of the organization.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Board Administration and Support - She/he is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and participates with the Board in establishing The Arc policies and procedures.
- Financial Management - She/he is responsible for utilizing all resources of The Arc in implementing the policies adopted by the Board of Directors. She/he establishes a yearly budget for Board approval and manages resources within the established budget guidelines. She/he is responsible for the maintenance of ethical business procedures and is responsible for maintaining a corporate culture that promotes ethical professional and financial practice.
- Program and Service Management (government or privately sponsored) – She/he oversees design, marketing, delivery and quality of the programs and services of the organization including accreditation. Program Director’s directly report to the Executive Director.
- Human Resource Management – She/he is responsible for obtaining necessary personnel to carry out the work and programs of The Arc. She/he is responsible for establishing and maintaining a competent organizational structure with functions, responsibilities, authority and accountability clearly defined.
- Fundraising – Works closely with the board on implementation of fundraising strategies and techniques, including grant applications, by identifying resource requirements, determining funding sources, establish and maintain relationships with donors, maintaining fundraising records and documentation, and soliciting the time and talents of the board and staff to result in new funding resources that lead to greater growth and sustainability.
- Community and Public Relations – She/he assures the organization and its mission, programs and services are presented in a strong, positive and consistent way to the community.
- Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in a relevant field from an accredited four-year college or university required; advanced degree(s) preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years proven supervisory and program management experience, with at least 2 years prior 501(c)(3) non-profit administrative experience preferred.
- Prefer experience with accreditation body such as CARF or similar.
- The ability, willingness, and interest to develop extensive knowledge of the community resources and personal, non-profit, business networks and contacts in and around the greater Greensboro area.
- The ability, willingness, and interest to develop knowledge of and/or experience working effectively with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff, clientele, the Board of Directors and the public.
- Demonstrated high level of judgment, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Considerable initiative, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, to work under pressure, and to meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience with the preparation of surveys, strategic plans, evaluations, compliance records and reports.
- Progressive management experience, including supervision at a comparable level of responsibility, and proven ability to develop, implement, and adhere to a budget.
- Character and poise to effectively maintain and portray a positive reputation and image of The Arc to the community and all stakeholders.
