The Calhoun School, a progressive independent school on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is seeking a full-time Digital Communications Specialist starting July 2021.

As the Digital Communications Specialist, you’ll be part of a three-person team who serves a wide range of constituents and needs throughout the school. In this role, you’ll wear multiple hats: you’ll be the school’s webmaster, overseeing the strategy and day-to-day management of our internal- and external-facing website, and provide support to community members for our various web-based tools. You’ll also play an integral role in the Communication Department’s storytelling efforts, assisting with writing and photography, and helping us improve and imagine new ways to promote our programs.

The Digital Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the school’s website: oversee web strategy and user experience, design web pages in response to school initiatives and department requests, create and maintain web-based content, and ensure best practices.
  • Partner with internal departments on web projects and be the point person for web-based tools.
  • Produce weekly newsletter and other email communications.
  • Write content for the web and emails and contribute to other writing projects as needed.
  • Photograph school happenings and events.
  • Assist with day-to-day functions of the Communications Office.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will have a hybrid skill set combining technical and communication competencies.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field
  • 3-6 years experience preferred or an acceptable combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with content management systems or website publishing platforms; an interest in web design and best practices;
  • Solid communication skills including written, verbal and interpersonal;
  • Experience with photography (this could include experience outside of a professional setting);
  • Facility with working collaboratively within and across teams and willingness to provide support to others;
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines consistently and prioritize, and great attention to detail;
  • Ability to solve problems creatively;
  • Growth mindset: Willingness to continue growing and learning from mistakes, and proactively learn new tools in an ever-changing digital landscape.
  • Appreciation for, and commitment to, diversity and social justice in multiple forms
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with change
