Under the direction of the CEO and supervision of the Marketing & Communication Manager, the grant writer will perform a variety of professional level administrative, technical and analytical duties in support of Community Bridges grant development/writing functions. This includes identifying, developing, writing, preparing, managing and supporting senior leadership in successful grant applications that support Community Bridges’ strategic planning priorities.

The grant writers’ responsibilities will include tracking, monitoring and coordinating with responsible parties ensuring contract and grant compliance. The role will ensure that such communication is in adherence with the Community Bridges’ overall communications plans, will require on an as needed basis mandatory representation at various funding related meetings, as well as support fund development department special events and other additional duties as assigned.


Grant Development and Reporting:

  1.  Leads the CB grant program to identify, select, and prepare grant applications.
  2. Under the direction of the CEO and supervision of the Marketing & Communication Manager,  and in coordination with management team and senior leadership; Develop, organize, compose, edit and report on proposals developed by other staff as well as your own to all funders.
  3. Researches, compiles and analyzes data, statistics and other information for reports, proposals and funder requests for funding sources, including major donors, businesses, foundations, government and corporations.
  4. Maintains Grants Information Library of grant resources and filings, current requests for proposals, successful sample proposals, and staff guidelines for developing, monitoring and writing grants.
  1. Research, interpret, and disseminate information of funding opportunities and sources, across various mediums, to keep staff apprised of current efforts. Maintains current knowledge of trends related to external funding opportunities across the agency



  1. Support grant development and project planning by researching, gathering information, scheduling, facilitating, and supporting meetings with staff and community partners to discuss and identify funding needs and grant possibilities based on Community Bridges priorities.
  2. In coordination across departments and programs, develop topical outlines, timelines, staffing, budgets, and boilerplate templates for grant proposals according to RFP guidelines and monitors awarded grants to ensure reporting adherence.
  3. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other agency staff members and with representatives of funding sources, governmental and community organizations, and others in regular contact with the agency.
  4. Maintains written office procedures manual for grant writing activities. Develops procedures, methods and systems as directed.
  5.  Provide training, encouragement, and support for staff to develop and write grant proposals.
  6. Perform related duties as required.



Fundraising & Events:

  1. Provides event support as needed by the Marketing & Communication Manager.
  2. Participates in the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns.
  3. Creates content and writing support as needed by the Marketing & Communication Manager.
  4. Assists with the recruitment and supervision of volunteers and contract workers as needed.  



Database Support:

  1. Becomes an expert in using Blackbaud Online Express for email communications and for preparing campaigns for website publication.
  2. Provides support to the Administrative Analyst for the Raisers Edge database when needed, including entering constituent, event, fund and campaign information for grant reporting information.

  1. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with agency staff, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  2. Communicates effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic and cultural groups and from different backgrounds and lifestyles; demonstrates a knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs.
  3. Uses appropriate judgment and discretion when dealing with information gained during the course of work; maintains confidentiality at all times.

  5. Drives a motor vehicle as needed for producing and distributing marketing collateral, events and meetings.

  • Experience providing a variety of professional, technical, and analytical grant development/writing duties, or performing related work, with minimum guidance and supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, ability to proofread and communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly.
  • Understanding of basic marketing, communications and public relations practices;
  • Expert level skills in MS Office;
  • Understands operations, services, and activities of a grant development/writing program
  • Experience with grant writing resources, funding information, and online/electronic grant submission systems.
  • Highly skilled in fiscal, statistical, and administrative research and report preparation.
  • Ability to interpret pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, RFP guidelines and regulations including local, state and federal laws, regulations, restrictions and requirements related to grants.
  • Ability to provide technical expertise to staff regarding funding sources, application procedures, grant development and writing, and budget and reporting requirements.

Ability to:

  • analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • clearly and creatively present data in text and graphics;
  • research and analyze social service and grant trends and best practices, and to recommend changes to practice based on this knowledge;
  • research, interpret and analyze data, including experience with Apricot or Social Solution software;
  • effectively and independently organize assigned tasks and work within deadlines;
  • use tact and discretion in handling a variety of sensitive and confidential matters;
  • develop and maintain good working relationships by dealing tactfully, cooperatively, effectively and respectfully with staff members, members of Board of Directors, community organizations, representatives of funding sources, contractors, governmental and regulatory bodies, and the public, including people from different racial, ethnic and cultural groups and from different backgrounds and lifestyles.


  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, have access to drive a motor vehicle incidental to the performance of the work, and be insured;
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in managing complex and multi-dimensional projects;
  • Degree from a four-year college or University, in journalism, English or marketing preferred, or equivalent experience;
  • Must have at least one year of demonstrated experience in performing similar work, preferably in a public or non-profit setting, or educational equivalent;
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as needed;
  • Must pass a criminal background check and maintain a clean record;
  • Experience in photography and video production is a plus;
  • Must be able to bend and lift up to 25 pounds when helping to set up events.


The Grants Writer position is represented by the SEIU bargaining unit.

  • This is a regular, confidential, non-exempt, 40 hr/wk position.
  • The agency rate of pay range for this position is $22.53-$31.13 per hour. The position will be offered at $22.53-$31.13 per hour, depending on education and experience (plus a .40/.10 per hour bilingual/biliterate differential after passing a test administered by the HR department).
  • Hours of work are typically 9AM-5PM, Monday-Friday. Regular on-site attendance is required.

  • First year: 16 vacation days and 10 holidays, with accrual based on 40 hr/wk.
