About All Our Kin

All Our Kin is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that trains, supports, and sustains family child care educators to ensure that children and families have the foundations they need to succeed in school and in life. At All Our Kin, we support family child care educators at every stage of their development using a strength-based, high-touch approach. Through our programs, family child care providers succeed as early childhood educators and small business owners; parents have access to high-quality, affordable child care, making it possible for them to enter into and remain in the workforce; and infants and toddlers gain the enriching experiences that prepare them to succeed in school and in life. All Our Kin is recognized as a national model, and has been proven through studies to raise the quality, availability, and sustainability of family child care.

All Our Kin first opened its doors in a housing development in New Haven, Connecticut in 1999. Today, we serve over 1,000 family child care educators with networks representing five Connecticut cities and the Bronx, in addition to the surrounding communities. Through technical assistance, our reach is even greater as we partner with public, private and nonprofit agencies to support and strengthen family child care.

What You Will Do

We are at a moment of unique opportunity for family child care. Many state and local leaders are looking for ways to expand sustainable, accessible, affordable child care options in their communities—especially for the children and families that face the greatest barriers to accessing care, such as families with infants and toddlers and families that work nontraditional hours. Many of these families rely on family child care. And yet, family child care has never been more at risk, as the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates existing disparities in funding and support. In response, All Our Kin’s Policy Advisor will provide technical assistance to leaders from across the country who are committed to creating the conditions for family child care to thrive. All Our Kin’s technical assistance program expands our reach by training new communities in our model and best practices. Key responsibilities of the Policy Advisor include:

  • Implementing All Our Kin’s Family Child Care Policy Cohorts, which involves:
    • Publicizing the Cohort opportunity to potential participants and managing the application and selection process
    • Building relationships with diverse teams of state and local leaders from across the country, including policymakers, family child care providers, CCR&Rs, early childhood advocates, and more
    • Scheduling, planning, and facilitating a series of full-Cohort, team, and one-on-one meetings
    • Establishing clear roles and expectations for All Our Kin and Cohort participants
    • Understanding the priorities of each state/community as they relate to the supply, quality, and sustainability of family child care
    • Co-creating (with the Cohort teams) localized policy agendas and action plans, and providing ongoing mentorship, support, and content-area expertise during implementation
    • Developing sustainability plans with Cohort participants to ensure the work continues after technical assistance from All Our Kin has ended
    • Providing follow-up support to previous Policy Cohort participants as needed
  • Delivering short-term policy advising engagements to partners outside of the Policy Cohorts with similar responsibilities as the above
  • Designing and implementing panels, presentations, and webinars to raise the visibility of family child care at the national level
  • Contributing to All Our Kin’s policy publications and communications and development efforts, as needed
  • Working closely with All Our Kin’s site-based Policy Team and colleagues on the Technical Assistance Team to share information, refine approaches, and align strategies
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest challenges, opportunities, and innovations in the field and identifying opportunities for All Our Kin and policy partners to make an impact
  • Building and maintaining strategic policy partnerships at the local, state, and federal levels, in collaboration with the Policy Director and CEO
  • Centering the voices of family child care providers and engaging them as partners whenever possible
