The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) pioneers collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges. We steward the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the hardworking communities that depend on it through a mix of science, education, and community programming.

The Marine Resource Education Program (MREP) empowers fishermen and other fisheries stakeholders to effectively participate in federal fisheries science and management through a 2-part series of 3-day workshops that engage 20-30 fishermen participants with 10-15 fisheries researchers and managers in a neutral setting. We operate in NOAA’s Greater Atlantic (New England and Mid-Atlantic council regions), Southeast (South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico council regions), Caribbean, and Pacific fishery regions, and conduct between 10-15 events annually. Foundationally a program developed in Maine by fishermen, for fishermen, MREP is committed to remaining regionally relevant through collaborative program development with regional leadership.

The MREP Program Manager will execute GMRI’s role in developing and running MREP workshops along the East Coast, which will include at least two of the following NOAA regions: Greater Atlantic, Southeast, and Caribbean. In addition, this position will oversee communication efforts designed to promote MREP and keep alumni connected.

The position is based at GMRI in Portland, Maine and requires frequent travel to the program regions, including two 3-4 day trips for each workshop offering (up to five per year) and up to three shorter (1-2 day) trips to facilitate steering committee meetings.

This is a salaried position. The MREP Program Manager will report to the MREP National Program Manager, and will work closely with GMRI’s other Community team programs, as well as a diverse group of fisheries industry partners throughout the regions MREP operates in. The target start date for this position is late April/early May 2021.
