FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: DC Lead Organizer

Position Summary:
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) is the leading voice for the country’s 2.5 million nannies, caregivers, and house cleaners, and organizes domestic workers across the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the local, state, and national levels and elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 74 affiliate organizations and chapters in 36 states and 17 cities.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) launched a new organizing project in the Washington D.C. area in 2017 to engage the 100,000 estimated domestic workers who live in the area and this project has since grown into an NDWA chapter. The chapter is currently staffed by two co-lead organizers and has a dedicated base of worker leaders.

This position will be part of NDWA’s nation-wide field, membership and organizer teams. Locally, they will add capacity to the existing organizing infrastructure to continue to grow our base, develop strong domestic worker leaders while also developing and running successful legislative campaigns. Specifically, this position will help expand the chapter’s reach throughout the DMV area by developing the organized base of domestic workers in Virginia and Maryland. They will work in close coordination with the existing co-lead organizers and the base of active domestic workers who meet monthly and participate in the leadership of our legislative campaigns. This position will also work in close collaboration with the Virginia team of NDWA’s 501(c)(4) sister organization, Care in Action, as well as partner organizations, allies and supporters in Virginia and Maryland.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Implement an outreach plan that utilizes both online and offline tools to engage domestic workers
  • Develop a group of domestic worker leaders who can facilitate and hold meetings in Virginia and Maryland, including continuing to cultivate the contacts developed during the recent campaign for a Virginia Domestic Workers Bill of Rights
  • Work with Care in Action in Virginia and local partners in Maryland to develop strategies and roadmap to advance legislative campaigns in Maryland and Virginia
  • Work closely with Care in Action staff in Virginia and NDWA’s state policy team on the implementation of the recently passed Virginia Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, including organizing trainings so workers know and can enforce their rights
  • Identify and provide support for worker leaders in the region to develop worker committees
  • Conduct mapping of new outreach regions in Virginia and Maryland (including areas of domestic worker and employer density, domestic worker serving organizations, key media outlets)
  • Assist in developing a strong network of support and solidarity with other local organizations, possibly build coalitions as necessary
  • Regularly input new contacts and member participation into chapter database
  • Support the co-organizers to grow the chapter's infrastructure and programming
  • Additional responsibilities as needed

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in grassroots community organizing, with an emphasis on labor organizing, racial justice, immigrant rights, and base building
  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for engaging multiracial, low wage communities and developing the leadership of domestic workers
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Strong and effective communicator
  • Must be fluent (speaking and writing) in English and Spanish
  • Experience developing, launching, and executing new campaigns and leadership development programs
  • Basic computer skills: (i.e. Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, hard-working, and self-disciplined
  • Ability to work well with a team and motivate others to take action
  • Excellent time & project management skills
  • Knowledge of issues affecting women of color, Black, and/or undocumented domestic workers nationally and locally

Preferred but not required:

  • Familiarity with the domestic worker sector and movement
  • Proficiency with technology for remote communications, meetings, webinars, project management
  • Experience with database management for organizing

Women, People of Color, People with Disabilities and LGBTQ people, and people with direct personal experience to domestic work are strongly urged to apply.

NDWA is a Union employer, this is a bargaining unit position.

Applications will only be accepted electronically. Please email a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to https://domesticworkers.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=165. Please include a daytime phone number where we can contact you. This position will remain open until filled.
