NILC is seeking a Grants Analyst who will report to the Associate Director of Finance and will be responsible for providing the analytical support in building financial proposals, translating those proposals into actionable budgets, and producing reports to measure progress against those budgets. This position will also be responsible for ensuring allocation of expenses against the grant budgets in compliance with grant terms and ensuring the reports are maintained in the organization’s accounting system.


The Grants Analyst will exercise independent judgment and discretion for allocating expenses to grants and make recommendations to improve grant reporting procedures and compliance.


The candidate must be proficient in and be able to prepare accurate grant proposals and budgets; provide accurate budget comparison and make recommendations for budget modifications. Success in this role will rely heavily on strong data management skills, analytical and automation skills, knowledge of grant management, financial accounting, cost principles and administrative requirements for non-profit organizations.  


      • Prepare program budgets and financial reports with a complete and thorough understanding of the funding source requirements and NILC’s operational requirements.
      • Allocate direct and indirect expenses to various grants in accounting system. Prepare, input and monitor grant-related journal entries, including revenue and indirect expense allocations. Assist with grant closeout procedures in accordance with regulations; reconcile and close grants on a timely basis. 
      • Monitor grant related expenditures, revenue, and budget reporting any inconsistencies with the approved budget and management plan in coordination with Development, Programs and Finance teams.
      • Prepare a variety of financial reports, externally as required by funders an internal and ad hoc reports as needed.
      • Implement model for building grant budget proposals, grant expense allocation and grant revenue management, including consolidating over 75 grant budgets and awards to obtain an integrated view of institutional revenue by source. 
      • Enhance the process to perform monthly journal entries to allocate grants across expenses accounts. 
      • Be the "go-to" person for questions regarding financial grant information.
      • Provide grant-related financial analysis as needed. 
      • Perform accounting and financial functions, including preparing monthly reports and budget and expense analysis.


      • Bachelor' s degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred.
      • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience developing grant budgets and reports with both large and small institutional funders.
      • Working knowledge of intermediate accounting and grant compliance procedures.
      • Ability to analyze and monitor financial statements, budgets and other financial reports.
      • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, and/or regulations.
      • Must have superior computer skills with proficiencies in Excel, database and computerized accounting systems (NetSuite, Intacct and/or QuickBooks software a plus).

This position is included in a bargaining unit of employees represented by a union, and the employment terms and conditions for this position may be subject to a labor-management negotiations and a resulting collective bargaining agreement.
