ABOUT GIRLS PREPARATORY SCHOOL:

Girls Preparatory School (GPS) was founded in 1906 to provide girls with the necessary courses to pursue a college education. GPS has proudly graduated almost 6,000 young women since then. Currently, 130 faculty and staff serve 550 girls in grades 6-12 with a college preparatory curriculum that includes a full complement of humanities, arts, and STEM courses, and co-curricular programs of leadership development, athletics, performing arts, and community engagement.

TEACHING POSITION SUMMARY:

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching girls at different grade levels and adjusting classroom management skills accordingly. The candidate for this position will be expected to design and maintain a class environment responsive to girls’ academic and personal growth and to establish effective rapport with students. They will work within a team setting of shared ideas and constructive feedback in a collaborative manner. Daily instructional plans should demonstrate knowledge of best practices in differentiated instruction and 21^st-century pedagogical approaches, encouraging student-led inquiry and creative critical thinking.

The teaching candidate should be a student of history and world languages, possess a deep educational and academic background, and demonstrate expertise in utilizing various pedagogical techniques. The exemplary candidate will also have experience with interdisciplinary connections and cultivating global perspectives in students.

TEACHING DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Division Heads, this faculty member will be expected to:

• Plan, develop, and execute lessons that reflect the history and social sciences curriculum with a focus on world history and ancient civilizations;
• Plan, develop, and execute lessons and units that reflect the French curriculum and align with ACTFL standards as well as the World Language department scope and structure;
• Adapt course curriculum for individual or small-group instruction to meet the needs of identified students or subgroups of students;
• Employ a variety of instructional and assessment strategies, including, but not limited to, direct instruction, guided practice, and inquiry-based learning activities to facilitate knowledge and skill development;
• Demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to the importance of technology in world language instruction;
• Work closely with departmental colleagues to create a cohesive interdisciplinary curriculum; 
• Equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and learn from the complex and diverse world we live in;
• Evaluate student progress and, with the assistance of support services, develop a path for all students to meet course standards in knowledge and skills;
• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;
• Demonstrate a dedication to ongoing professional development by taking advantage of departmental and institutional opportunities; 
• Implement and maintain a standard of performance consistent with GPS’s goal of academic excellence;
• Serve as an advisor within the school’s advisory program; and
• Perform other related duties as directed by the Head of School or Division Heads.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in history or an associated field; 
• College-level coursework or a degree in French as well as an understanding of language pedagogy; native speakers of French preferred;
• MA or MEd is highly desirable;
• AP certification preferred but not required;
• A minimum of three to five years’ teaching experience in French, history, and/or social studies;
• Proficiency in educational technology and 21st-century pedagogy;
• Understanding of and commitment to the instructional and educational practices that support guide, and inspire girls and young women to identify their strengths;
• Demonstrated commitment to building cultural competencies and empowering students to engage across differences;
• Demonstrated cultural awareness, an understanding of various perspectives, and the ability to interact respectfully with students of other cultures and backgrounds;
• Excellent planning and organizational skills;
• Outstanding and varied written and verbal communication skills; and
• Collegiality and eagerness to collaborate with fellow faculty members in a cross-disciplinary fashion.
