Job Summary:

The Early Learning Program Specialist (ELPS) is the community-based implementor of the Parent Child Home Program. The ELPS is trained by the Parent-Child Home Program Coordinator and is assigned a specific number of families to visit in their homes following the protocols, curriculum and strategies established by the PCHP program and SOMOS Mayfair.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with children and has the ability to relate to parents, and other caregivers, as equal partners in helping prepare children for school and life success.  The ELPS is flexible in adapting to different home environments; displays the ability to deal with challenging circumstances and the judgement to seek help when needed.

The ELPS is tasked with developing strong leadership in the predominantly immigrant Mayfair community amongst neighborhood residents and school parents; facilitates solution-based discussions around multi-generational challenges and supports the development of community strategies to support a thriving and vibrant Mayfair.

The ELPS reports directly to SOMOS Parent-Child Home Program Coordinator and works alongside a team to advance early child development, family support and engagement, and authentic community decision making in local education systems, city and county government. The ELPS will conduct family visits twice a week, she/he will complete family assessments, enter data into database, assist with recruitment and support the SOMOS Mayfair Literacy Platform. The ELPS will motivate and engage families to participate in our leadership development pipeline and organizing efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Execution

  • Visit a set number of families, in their homes, twice a week, modeling reading, play, and verbal interaction behaviors and activities with two and three-year-old children and their primary caretaker.
  • Support parent-child interaction, language development, early literacy and social-emotional development
  • Model age appropriate expectations
  • Complete written reports after each visit
  • Complete required assessments and collect data as assigned
  • Enter data into PCHP management information system as needed
  • Assist site Coordinator with recruitment of families and building community connections
  • Support families in identifying early learning opportunities and support children with transitions
  • With the support of the Coordinator, refer and connect families to community resources
  • Support and organize group activities for families, including educational activities, parent workshops and field trips
  • Support SOMOS Mayfair leadership development with participating families
  • Develop leadership of participants to increase the overall community power and close the opportunity and achievement gap in the Alum Rock Unified School District
  • Coordinate work with SOMOS Coordinators to align literacy, parent engagement and organizing strategies, platform, outreach, and strategic direction across all community leaders and schools

Professional Development and Training

  • Complete a minimum of 16-hours of training in the PCHP model delivered by the PCPH Coordinator prior to beginning home visits
  • Complete including child abuse and safety training as directed by SOMOS Mayfair
  • Create an annual professional development plan to develop or strengthen essential skills and seek opportunities for greater and on-going learning, including community organizing models and the practice of popular education pedagogy
  • Participate in agency wide decision-making arenas and in regular internal political education as needed.
  • Participate in SOMOS Mayfair Popular University and Collective Meeting

Creating a Community Network

  • Establish relationships with organizations and agencies providing services and resources to community
  • Work with community partners, staff and community to identify eligible PCHP families

Family Support

  • Work closely with SOMOS staff, partners and school district staff to provide supportive services and resources to participating families
  • Assist participating families in interpreting and responding to evaluations and recommendations that have resulted from a Parent-Child Home Program referral

Impact Evaluation

  • Support strategic planning process with leaders in program area as well as collectively in teams to ensure program effectiveness, depth and sustainability

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of early childhood development;
  • Appropriate literacy level and writing abilities to conduct the observational skills to complete the required paperwork on family participation, write anecdotal home session reports after each visit, and complete child and parent evaluations;
  • Relevant life experiences to develop the Cultural Humility to engage with families and extended community members;
  • At least 6 months of experience working with young children or parents and/or with community-based organizations;
  • Appropriate oral communication skills and ability to communicate with a broad audience;
  • Bilingual/biliterate Spanish-English preferred; Spanish language ability is required
  • Valid California drivers license and proof of auto insurance required (access to reliable transportation is essential for this position);
  • Computer proficient in MS Word, Excel, Internet and e-mail;
  • Able to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends;
  • Fingerprint and background check required.

Location & Response to COVID-19

The Mayfair Coordinator position normally operates out of SOMOS office located in the Mayfair neighborhood of East San Jose. Due to circumstances caused by the novel coronavirus, the team at SOMOS is currently working remotely. Recognizing that this is a highly unusual and rapidly evolving situation, questions or concerns around location and work logistics will be openly addressed during the hiring process. Candidates should, however, expect to work on site at SOMOS office whenever it has been deemed safe to return to work by local/state governments.
