The East Oakland Boxing Association (EOBA) is a youth and community development organization dedicated to supporting and empowering low-income families in Oakland. We provide high quality programming and services that promote physical wellness, academic achievement and build vital life skills. We support youth holistically by providing essential services to their families and the broader community. We believe healthy people build healthy families and healthy families create healthy communities.

EOBA was founded in 1987 by Stanley Garcia, a former Golden Gloves Boxing Champion and professional boxer and long-time Oakland resident. Anchored in East Oakland, EOBA has served over 30,000 low-income youth of color for over 30 years as one of the only youth development community, wellness organizations who offer services in the neighborhood of deep East Oakland. East Oakland stretches between Lake Merritt in the northwest and San Leandro in the southeast, located 20 miles southwest from San Francisco, CA.

SUMMARY

The East Oakland Boxing Association (EOBA) seeks an experienced, passionate, and visionary Executive Director (ED) to lead the EOBA into its next chapter of growth and success. This individual will be responsible for leading and managing the organization to ensure its success in meeting programmatic, fundraising, and financial sustainability goals. The ED will primarily be responsible for managing staff, partnering with the Board of Directors, and serving as the primary liaison between EOBA and its external audiences including parents, community members, the board, funders, policymakers, and program partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

BOARD RELATIONS

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and Committees, informing, assessing, and addressing issues that affect the organization in a timely and transparent fashion

  • In concert with the Board of Directors, implement and track strategies to expand public awareness of the work and program of the EOBA and its value

  • Oversee and report on the organization’s results and impact to the Board of Directors

  • Present annual budget and quarterly financial reports to the Board of Directors

  • Assure EOBA compliance accountability to the Board of Directors, funders and regulatory bodies

  • Engage with the Treasurer and Board of Directors in financial planning and diversification activities

  • Provide guidance on organizational planning, including staff needs and development

  • Create awareness as to the technological needs of EOBA and potential investments required

 

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

  • Responsible for the planning, organization, and vision of the organization’s operations and programs by overseeing the daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction of all program strategy, compliance, quality assurance and program efficiency

  • Create annual business plans for the attainment of goals and objectives set working alongside the Board of Directors

  • Provide guidance and direction on the creation of a technology plan that will allow EOBA to better serve the community and stakeholders

  • Regularly update EOBA’s disaster recovery plan

 

FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

  • Manage monthly cash flow and P&L statements

  • Comply with all federal, state, and local legislation

  • Partner with the Board of Directors for the development of operations-based financial modeling

  • Partner with the Board of Directors to develop and implement consistent inventory and cost accounting policies, procedures, and operational reporting/metrics

  • Coordinate and lead annual budget reviews, monthly and quarterly reviews and periodic forecast updates with operational and senior management for all locations

  • Approve major systems implementations related to cost and inventory control

  • Ensure Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards for non-profits are adhered to

 

COMMUNITY RELATIONS, PARTNERSHIPS AND MARKETING

  • Serve as the face of the organization and actively participate in external events, both increasing visibility, credibility and brand in the market, and developing strategic and community partnerships in order to increase community awareness and expand our impact

  • Will be the chief ambassador, internally and externally, for the EOBA's initiatives

  • Represent the organization and increase awareness by being the spokesperson and liaison with local media

  • Oversee all external communication materials including, website, marketing materials, an events calendar, newsletters and social media content

  • Position the EOBA as a vital, effective youth and community development wellness organization

  • Ensure that services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet or exceed strategic goals and objectives

  • Assure professional relationships with individuals and organizations and community members

  • Create a strong line of communication with local, regional and state lawmakers

  • Maintain contacts with key individuals in both public and private sectors

  • Ensure the representation of the EOBA concerns to local, county and state policy makers, task forces, advisory committees, planners and funding bodies

 

FUNDRAISING MANAGEMENT

  • Set and meet aggressive annual fundraising goals, in partnership with the Board of Directors, to secure financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals and government funding sources

  • Develop a yearly actionable plan with metrics for fundraising

  • Work with Staff and Board members on annual fundraising events

  • Prepare accurate, regular and timely analyses that capture and communicate fundraising results, variances, and performance trends

OTHER

  • Other duties assigned by the Board of Directors

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and lead an effective team dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s mission through highly successful program implementation, community engagement, partnership development and fundraising targets

  • Provide leadership to and manage the hiring efforts of site Staff to ensure appropriate support of all departments

  • Retain a diverse, highly qualified Staff and Volunteers by providing equitable career coaching, growth, and personal development for all

  • Manage a culturally diverse Staff, Clientele, and Community whose skills, cultures, and spoken languages reflect the communities EOBA serves

  • Identify and implement staffing requirements for efficient operations, maintaining a strong culture and work climate that attracts and retains staff, and drives the organization’s mission

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university, MBA preferred, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in non-profit management including Governance, Board Relations, Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Program and Project Management, Fundraising, and Public Outreach and Communication

  • 5+ years of senior management experience

  • Previous leadership experience in the nonprofit sector desired

  • Fundraising and nonprofit finance experience

  • Knowledgeable with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards for non-profits

  • Ability to bring industry experience and contacts to the position

  • Strong communications, public relations and marketing

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with an innovative approach to business planning

  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization

  • Deep understanding of equity, East Oakland and the community EOBA serves

  • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred

OTHER DESIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • A passion for mission-based marketing and relationship building

  • Good understanding of non-profit structure, rules and guidelines

  • Must understand basic financial concepts and statements, cash flow, profit and loss statements

  • Strong public relations, presentation and interaction skills and experience

  • Ability to interact with media and provide interviews for media outlets

  • Ability to work collaboratively with city, county, state and federal government agencies

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Excellent English language communication skills including the ability to read and summarize material in a broad range of professional publications and the ability to write clear, concise and compelling reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Fluency in languages other than English will be considered a plus, especially Spanish.

COMPUTER SKILLS
Knowledge and personal proficiency in Microsoft Suite, as well as social media, website development and management and the Internet. The ability to learn new programs and platforms and their use with minimal instruction moving forward.

REASONING ABILITY
The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform essential job functions of the position.
