For 50 years, Buckelew Programs has been committed to the mission of providing mental health and addiction services that promote recovery, resilience and hope. The agency provides numerous essential community services throughout Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties ranging from supported housing and job training for people with mental illness to outpatient psychotherapy and other support for children, adults and families, as well as residential detoxification services, and a regional suicide prevention program and crisis hotline. 

The Communications and Development Manager has a dual role to nurture and to grow brand awareness and philanthropy for Buckelew Programs. Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Communications and Development Manager fosters support through multiple communication channels and creates engagement with the greater community. The Communications and Development Manager is responsible for marketing and media activities that will expand Buckelew Programs’ visibility to diverse audiences, increase community engagement and fundraising income.  The Communications and Development Manager joins a dynamic and growing development department where teamwork, collaboration, transparency and a sense of humor are highly valued.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development:

  • Work with the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), develop and support implementation of short and long term planning to engage donors with a goal of moving them into personal relationship-based development efforts and increase funding for Buckelew Programs
  • Develop, create and oversee communications associated with the annual giving program, including conceptualizing, writing, editing and managing all aspects of the program
  • Select and manage relationships with outside vendors, including graphic designers, printers, mail houses, web designers and photographers
  • Collaborate with Institutional Giving Manager, design and implement strategies (sponsorships, business council, and business networks) for developing and growing annual support from local corporations and small businesses
  • Support the CPO to develop relevant reports and projections for planning and presentation purposes
  • Utilize data (including donor giving histories and wealth screening information) to develop metrics for success, track progress, recommend benchmarks and develop reports for internal use, the Development Committee and the Board of Directors
  • Work closely with the Development Data Associate to ensure prompt donor acknowledgment, create donor reports for analyzing campaign results and giving trends, and develop dashboard metrics to track performance against goals

Communications:   

  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and CPO, design, implement and manage the strategy and execution of Buckelew Programs’ external communications, brand positioning and creative marketing that includes content development and editing
  • Develop and manage the annual communications plan and calendar to foster pro-active messaging throughout the year, including opportunities such May which is National Mental Health Month
  • Manage all aspects of Buckelew Programs’ digital presence that includes: content development, web analytics and oversight of pertinent vendors to deliver compelling and engaging communications to the greater community and refine messaging for increased effectiveness
  • Partner with Buckelew Programs’ staff to develop client stories and create talking points for the CEO and selected leadership
  • Develop and maintain a multi-media press list, develop relationships with multi-channel media professionals, field press requests, pitch stories and write press releases
  • Design and manage the production of newsletters, the annual impact report, and video collateral
  • Work collaboratively with CPO and Institutional Giving Manager to develop and write case for support for Buckelew Programs and for selected programs with relevant information that includes (but not limited to) client stories, testimonials, impact data, financials, photos and videos
  • Manage vendors/consultants contracts and work that supports communications and marketing

General

  • Actively participate as a collaborative team member in raising increased funds and awareness for Buckelew Programs
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Buckelew Programs’ history, services and vision for the future and the ability to articulate the mission and values of Buckelew Programs
  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, writing or related field, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years nonprofit experience in development and/or communications. 
  • Experience managing digital marketing that include social media, website and digital content
  • Familiarity with behavioral health and/or healthcare sector and institutional funders in the North Bay Counties of Marin, Sonoma, and Napa

Professional Skills/Abilities:  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate and engaging content for multiple mediums
  • Superb editing and proofreading skills  
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Docs and Outlook
  • Experience managing digital marketing platforms
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources, basic fundraising techniques and strategies  
  • Highly organized and able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks, responsibilities and manage to the critical plan  
  • Knowledge of WordPress or equivalent platform
  • Familiarity with donor database and email management (especially Salsa and Engage systems) 
  • Design abilities and comfort with design and photo editing software 
  • Highly desirable for applicant to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and a functioning car for use on the job 

Physical requirements:  

  • Working remotely during current crisis accepted with future remote work possible and to be discussed with CPO 
  • Regular local travel 
  • Requires occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds); standing, walking, reaching, talking and hearing for most of a shift
