POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief of Staff will serve as a strategic implementer, communicator, and operator to ensure successful outcomes for Spring Point Partners’ President, Catherine Murphy. This director-level role will manage a broad and diverse range of responsibilities and relationships, both internally and externally. The role will serve as a “right-hand” to the President to ensure she is focused on key outcomes. The Chief of Staff will also serve as a critical lynchpin in facilitating inter-connectivity among SPP, the Berwind family, and the Berwind family office (“NewCo”). The position will also lead the President’s external engagement efforts to elevate the impact of Spring Point Partners and the Berwind family.

Key working relationships for the Chief of Staff include: the President, the President’s Executive Administrator (EA), the VP, Culture and Values as well as the other members of the SPP leadership team. The Chief of Staff will ensure the efficient functioning of the President’s Office and serve as an effective and respectful extension of the President herself, as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief of Staff’s key responsibilities will encompass three primary areas:

  • Implement the President’s strategic priorities
    • Ensure execution of the President’s key priorities through the coordination of key internal and external team members, and through consistent tracking and management of working, planning and thinking sessions
    • Assist in brainstorming, design, and execution of new projects spanning the portfolio of the President’s priorities, including special projects as it relates to the Berwind family
    • Ensure communication and collaboration between Spring Point Partners and the Berwind family office; facilitate conversations on behalf of the President, when needed
    • Effectively facilitate SPP leadership team meetings; make sure all leadership team members are prepared, record meeting notes, and confirm prompt follow-up of action items
    • Act as “right hand” to the President on Berwind board governance; accompany the President on board calls, record notes, and conduct any follow-up items; facilitate inter-connectivity between the President and Berwind family
    • Serve as liaison between the President and key staff to ensure clear lines of communication, sharing of resources and information, and assisting with joint projects and initiatives
    • Independently lead special projects that do not fall “cleanly” to a leadership team member
  • Develop and execute the President’s external engagement strategy
    • Perform a thorough audit of the company’s current executive communications efforts and conduct a careful review of the new strategic plan
    • Devise an external engagement strategy for the President, ensuring time is allocated effectively and strategic objectives are being met
    • Develop and deliver communications on behalf of the President and the Berwind family, when needed, including but not limited to correspondence, email communication, briefing documents, and meeting materials
    • Ensure consistent messaging and communication between the President and internal staff and/or external stakeholders; serve as President’s proxy, when needed
  • Manage the Office of the President
    • Establish and manage day-to-day operations and logistics for the Office of the President, in partnership with the President’s Executive Administrator
    • Ensure effective execution of the President’s workload and work with the President’s EA to manage volume; make sure priorities are completed accurately and promptly, and make tradeoffs so the President’s calendar reflects her quarterly and annual priorities
    • Assess inquiries directed to the President, determine the proper course of action and delegate to the appropriate individual(s) or manage directly
    • Serve as a conduit with the Berwind family, trustees, and other relationships to ensure strong coordination with SPP

ALL STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizational Involvement: participate as an engaged member of the organization beyond core responsibilities including, but not limited to DEI efforts, participating in training/professional development, attending staff meetings/events, and contributing to building the organization's values-based culture
  • Professional Development: maintain skills and knowledge of industry standards, as well as trends, and advise Management of key developments that could impact the organization

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

The Chief of Staff should possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

  • At least 10-12 years’ professional experience, preferably in executive office and/or project management functions
  • At least 4-5 years’ experience in a communications role or function; experience managing and executing executive communications across different media
  • Solid business acumen; an understanding of various business disciplines and how they work together
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously; reliable and competent at prioritizing and adjusting timetables based on demand and circumstances
  • Strong strategic mindset; ability to drive priorities from conception to completion effectively
  • Capacity to be proactive by anticipating needs and looking ahead
  • High energy and passionate commitment to the mission of SPP and its impact areas
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation to manage a broad range of relationships with care, to read situations well, and to treat others with respect and humility
  • Superb judgment and integrity; maturity to handle sensitive information with care and confidentiality
