JOB/POSITION TITLE: Director of Development

STATUS: Exempt

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for directing all aspects of Hawaiian Humane Society's donor engagement and fundraising programs. Works closely with the President/CEO, Board members, and development team to achieve, if not exceed, all annual contributed revenue goals from individual donors, corporations, foundations, government agencies. Participates in strategic planning; departmental budget preparation; donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition; and special events. Provides quality people care in accordance with the organization's mission, goals, and leadership philosophy while applying the highest ethical standards.

Reports to: President/CEO

Supervises: Development team, including Manager of Annual Giving, Special Events Manager, Gifts & Database Coordinator, Grants Officer, Planned Giving Consultant, and support staff members

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Annual Fund Raising. Directs the Manager of Annual Giving in raising operating revenue for Hawaiian Humane from established and new fundraising campaigns. Activities include prospecting, researching, communication with internal departments and staff, and appropriate committees and Board members. Responsibilities also include overseeing the preparation of grant proposals and reports and the direct cultivation and solicitation of gifts from individual and institutional sources.
  • Major Gifts. Works to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects to meet or exceed targeted Works with members of executive leadership and the Board in their work to do the same.
  • Special Events Fundraising. Directs the Special Events Manager in successfully achieving fundraising goals for major annual fundraising events such as PetWalk and Tuxes & Tails.
  • Institutional Fundraising. Direct the Grants Officer in preparing proposals and reports to institutional funders. Lead relationship building with program officers at foundations, corporations, and government agencies to ensure proposals are as competitive as possible. Research new sources of institutional support.
  • Planned Giving: Direct the Planned Giving Consultant in outreach to bequest and other "planned" gift prospects to secure new legacy gifts in support of the mission.
  • Program Evaluation. Reviews, evaluates, and makes strategic enhancements to existing fundraising programs on an annual basis and makes recommendations on ways to increase revenue to the President/CEO.
  • Data Management and Donor Relations. Directs the Gifts & Database Coordinator in the effective and consistent recording of all donor data in Hawaiian Humane's fundraising database. Oversees the data selected for direct mail, newsletter, invitations, etc. Oversees the maintenance, confidentiality, accuracy and timely entry of the database and donor records.
  • Supervision. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates performance of development staff. Recommends training programs for staff to ensure development and continuous improvement in the performance of their duties.
  • Donor Stewardship. Directs timely and accurate response to donors' concerns, requests, and gifts. Oversees the planning and execution of donor stewardship events. Develops and maintains relationships with donors including individuals, foundations, corporations, community organizations, and government agencies.
  • Resource Management. Effectively manages resources--both human and financial--for the maximum benefit to the organization. Prepares and executes departmental budget on an annual basis to include projected income and expenses. Monitors revenue and expenses in relation to annual budget.
  • Compliance. Assures compliance with all legal, tax, and government requirements and reporting. Works closely with the finance department.
  • Administrative/Reporting. Supervises administrative functions including department files, database, mailing procedures, donor acknowledgement and recognition, bequest files, and planned gift database. Ensures accurate and timely preparation of required reports.
  • Professional Development. Keeps current on fund development activities and trends through participation in appropriate continuing education, associations, and licensing bodies.

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.

JOB CONDITIONS:

  • Work Environment: Indoors in air-conditioned office and out in the community meeting with donors. Outdoors during special events and other donor-related occasions.
  • Equipment Use: PC proficiency (MS Word, Excel), Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge and standard office equipment use.
  • Hours: Full-time. Work hours and days may vary due to meetings with donors, other constituents, and business needs.

  • Must maintain personal conduct, appearance, and office space as a professional. Includes well-groomed and professional appearance and tidy office areas.

  • Must be able to meet with donors at indoor and outdoor locations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Skills/Knowledge: Excellent leadership, relationship and trust-building, and communication skills. Experience with and comfort working with a variety of technology and computer programs. Ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and meet deadlines. Must be detail-oriented and possess strong follow-up skills. Valid driver's license, good driving record, access to own automobile and proof of no-fault insurance required. Commitment to Hawaiian Humane goals, objectives, and programs.
  • Education/Training: College degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Five+ years' experience in development, fundraising, or a similar position. Prior experience leading and managing professionals in a similar environment preferred.
