Friends of Refugees’ Embrace Program works to support, advocate for, and educate new Americans throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. Embrace seeks to empower and train new Americans to serve as childbirth educators and labor doulas with their ethnic communities. In FY2020 we supported 79 expecting mothers during their pregnancy and birth experience.

Position Purpose

The Director of Embrace Refugee Birth leads a team responsible for creating a culture of support and empowerment for expectant mothers in Clarkston, Georgia. This position will collaborate with the Director of Health & Well-being to provide vision and strategy, hiring and developing a qualified team, and contributing to the development and deployment of initiatives aligned with Friends of Refugees’ mission, vision, and values. This position reports to the Director of Health & Well-being.

Essential Job Functions:

Leadership

Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of Embrace participants.

  • Ensure leadership style creates a culture where every team member feels respected, valued, and heard.
  • Lead team by providing growth and development opportunities, coaching, and feedback.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members ensuring each understand their role and responsibilities.
  • Recruit, interview, and select qualified individuals for full-time, part-time, and internship positions.
  • Onboard new team members ensuring a robust orientation to Friends of Refugees and its programs and provide appropriate and timely training for their roles.
  • Implement Friends of Refugees’ human resources policies, procedures, and practices.

Daily Operations

Provide organization and exercise decision-making and problem solving skills to ensure daily operations run smoothly and effectively.

  • Assist team in planning and managing programs by providing clear and timely direction, input, and feedback.
  • Ensure the team has the necessary resources to effectively implement high quality programs.
  • Develop an annual budget and operating plan for Embrace in partnership with the Director of Health & Well-being and the Director of Operations.
  • Execute annual budget and operating plan for Embrace in partnership with other Embrace staff.
  • Communicate with program participants and other community stakeholders to engage their support for and solicit input to improve the program.
  • Vet research proposals from academic institutions, determine if the return on investment of time and resources warrants our participation, and act as the liaison between staff/clients and researchers.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Volunteer Engagement to recruit and involve volunteers.
  • Coordinate efforts across Embrace activities for the benefit of participants and effective use of resources.
  • Monitor, measure, and evaluate Embrace activities on a regular basis and implement changes as appropriate to improve outcomes for program participants.
  • Ensure that program activities operate within Friends of Refugees’ policies and procedures.

Development and Fundraising

Work with the Friends of Refugees development team to seek and obtain robust financial support for Embrace.

  • Support the Director of Health & Well-being and the development team to develop funding plans and proposals and provide content for grant applications for Embrace.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Health & Well-being and the Friends of Refugees’ development team to develop and implement an ongoing communication plan with volunteers, financial supporters, funding organizations, and other supporters and stakeholders of Embrace.
  • Represent the program in presentations, engagement activities, community events, and other Friends of Refugees activities to engage supporters, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support the Director of Health & Well-being and the Friends of Refugees’ development team in planning and executing fundraising campaigns.
  • Surround the program with a growing cohort of advocates and donors who will work together for its success, including the Embrace advisory council, individuals, churches, foundations, corporate partners, and other non-profits.
  • Empower and utilize the advisory council to support the development of Embrace

Strategic Planning

In collaboration with the Director of Health & Well-being, determine strategies to move Embrace forward, set goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate the process and results.

  • Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement forms and records to document program activities, outputs, and outcomes.

  • Lead: Possess maturity to appropriately blend the achievement of desired program results with the culture and heart of the organization and community to maximize impact.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Three or more years’ experience in nonprofit program leadership, encompassing leadership of program delivery and program fundraising.
  • University degree with relevant courses of study.
  • Experience in health education, especially beneficial if related to maternal and child health; experience in evidence based practice and research/data collection.
  • Experience with learning and utilizing computer and social media applications for communication and program management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience soliciting individual and organization donors and advocates to grow and resource specific programming.
