Overview

 

The BUILD Initiative (buildinitiative.org) is a national effort that advances state work on behalf of young children (prenatal-five), their families, and communities. BUILD staff partner with early childhood state leaders focused on early learning, health, mental health and nutrition, child welfare, and family support and engagement to create the policies, infrastructure, and cross-sector connections necessary for quality and equity. BUILD provides consultation, planning, and tailored implementation assistance, learning opportunities, resources, and cross-state peer exchanges. These efforts help state leaders improve and expand access to quality and promote equitable outcomes for our youngest children.

The BUILD team is virtual; team members are located across the country. The person filling this position will work from a home office. Team members have opportunities to attend in-person meetings but work primarily via phone and computer.

BUILD is fiscally sponsored by TSNE (tsne.org), which provides financial and grants management, human resources, legal counsel, and other supports.



Responsibilities

BUILD is searching for a Assistant Director for its National Collaborative for Infants and Toddlers (NCIT) Capacity-Building Hub. This position is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a highly effective team to bring about positive change for young children and families, to learn about all aspects of the early childhood field, and to work at the forefront of an exciting movement to promote early childhood systems building. This position is part of the NCIT Capacity-Building Hub which is dedicated to supporting state and community leaders working to improve outcomes for infants and toddlers and pregnant and parenting families.

Essential Functions

  • Vision and Leadership
    • Support the NCIT Hub Director establish, execute, and meet strategic organizational objectives;
    • Exemplify and extol BUILD's values and bring to the NCIT Hub Team vision and leadership on racial equity, and equity more generally;
    • Advise the Hub Director on day-to-day-operations, analysis of critical issues and manage several aspects of the Hub;
    • Represent the NCIT Hub externally, as necessary, at national or state-specific meetings, networking events, conferences, and seminars.
  • Managing Teams and Supporting Capacity Building and Professional Development
  • Equity
    • Coordinate, develop, and execute the NCIT Capacity-Building Hub's Prenatal-to-Age-Three Equity Plan, which will help state and community leader and Hub Support Lead efforts to advance toward the goal that each and every child, regardless of race, neighborhood, or family income, has equitable opportunities to achieve successful education and health outcomes, e.g., reduction in low-birth-weight disparities, access to nutrition, and access to high-quality infant and toddler child care. This work will build on BUILD's existing equity work and create specific strategies related to the states and communities working on PN-3;
    • Ensure that all the of the NCIT Hub's activities and resources are infused with an equity perspective including the annual grantee meeting, the webinars and learning communities, and the websites and online community forums;
    • Identify additional leaders and experts who can support equity work in the PN-3 space.
  • NCIT Hub Leads
    • Manage the staff, contractors, and consultants who serve as Hub Support Leads to the state and community Pritzker Children's Initiative grantees;
    • Facilitate calls of Hub Leads to share information, jointly problem solve, and continuously improve the Hub's capacity-building efforts;
    • Facilitate a monthly call between funder and Hub Leads to share information and joint problem solve;
    • Organize and oversee an online learning community of the Hub Leads to bolster their efforts and ensure that they are sharing knowledge and skills with each other;
    • Update and develop additional Hub Lead Orientation tools and continually produced resources;
    • Serve as a Hub Lead to at least one state and at least one community grantee, as needed;
    • Work with BUILD's Evaluation Manager to craft technical assistance surveys and assessment tools that measure the effectiveness of TA provided;
    • Help coordinate and support Hub Lead efforts in developing relevant Communities of Practice for grantees;
  • Fellowship
    • Supervise the Fellowship Specialist;
    • Ensure that the NCIT Fellowship builds on the most promising strategies and effective resource materials already developed by the BUILD Initiative;
  • Other Duties
    • Design, coordinate, and participate in national and regional meetings, national and topical webinars, and Communities of Practice.

Qualifications

 

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Graduate degree in Early Childhood, Human Development, health and/or educational disparities, or relevant discipline.
  • Proven leadership skills in managing teams, with at least three years of experience in a leadership position within an organization.
  • Strong supervisory skills, especially in overseeing remote staff.
  • Proficiency in training, facilitation, and providing technical assistance for equity interventions at the state and local levels.
  • Vision and experience leading change efforts and/or technical assistance efforts related to early childhood and related to advancing equitable outcomes.
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment, especially at the national level.
  • Experience working at the state level in the public sector or as an advocacy leader.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, i.e., detailed-oriented with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to delegate tasks.
  • Familiarity with the early childhood sector and systems building.
  • Creative problem solver.
  • Experience working with and supporting diverse public- and private-sector leaders.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint, OneDrive, and Salesforce.
