New York State Unemployment Reform Campaign Coordinator

Job Description: The New York State Unemployment Reform Campaign Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating a short-term statewide legislative campaign to reform NY’s Unemployment Insurance system during the 2021 legislative session. The Campaign Coordinator will work with a coalition of organizations to fix problems unemployed workers face when dealing with unemployment, particularly the partial unemployment rule, which causes workers who only work a few hours a week to lose most or all of their unemployment benefits. The Campaign Coordinator will:

  • Staff and build the coalition: recruit new coalition partners, create agendas, facilitate meetings, provide administrative support, and manage coalition partners' work on the campaign.

Recruit organizations and groups to support reform legislation across the state.

Educate groups and organizations, unemployed workers, and other potential stakeholders about the issue, campaign, and legislation.

Organize legislative meetings with key targets.

Recruit unemployed workers to meet with legislators and help write workers’ stories for media, meetings, and other communications efforts.

Work with United Today, Stronger Tomorrow’s and other coalition members’ digital staff to build a digital campaign strategy (sign-on letters, social media posts, emails, building lists of workers, and producing videos).

Coordinate with unions and community and worker organizations to ID members who are impacted by issues related to unemployment, specifically partial unemployment.

Support other campaigns that focus on unemployment and workers’ issues connected to the Covid crisis.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate is based in NY State and has experience in legislative advocacy and campaign coordination. While not necessary, direct base-building and leadership development experience is a plus, especially with workers and communities of color. Strong organizational, administrative, management, and writing skills are also important. Other experience requirements include:

  • Working on a campaign (2 to 3 years) - preferably an issue, administrative, corporate, or unionization campaign.

Managing projects, programs, or an organizing committee.

Working in coalitions and/or with a set of organizations and partners.

Staffing legislative meetings and working with policy makers.

Using digital and social media for campaign efforts.

Recruiting, developing, and managing organizations, leaders, and community members to engage in campaign work.

    Excellent project management.

Women, people of color, native/Indigenous people, and LGBTQ+ people are strongly encouraged to apply. Spanish speaking proficiency is helpful but not required.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $4k-$5k a month for a period of 3 months with a possible extension based on the status of the campaign. This position will be housed at United Today, Stronger Tomorrow, a project of Community Change (www.unitedtoday.org). We are looking to fill this position ASAP.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to jobs@unitedtoday.org that includes why you are interested in this position and how your experience can help win this campaign.
