The Arvada Fire Protection District is seeking candidates for a Digital Marketing and Communications Specialist position! This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt, benefited position. The successful candidate will build, manage, and coordinate internal and external communications for staff, partners, and external audiences across all communication channels. The Specialist will be expected to use a wide variety of communication strategies to promote, inform and engage the community in designated programs, projects, services and initiatives.

Responsibilities include producing articles, website management, digital newsletters, social media content creation and management of various platforms, and other publications. In addition, you will act as one of the on-call Public Information Officers and will be responsible for communicating crucial information effectively to the public. This will include responding to requests for information from media outlets.

The Arvada Fire Protection District is a special governmental district that protects lives, property and the environment through our involvement in firefighting, emergency medical care, fire prevention, disaster response and community risk reduction efforts. AFPD is known nationally for our progressive stance on serving the community and for the passion our staff has creating a healthy and vibrant community for residents and visitors. AFPD currently maintains 8 active fire stations throughout approximately 43 square miles in the City of Arvada, the northern portion of the City of Wheat Ridge and portions of unincorporated Jefferson County. There are nearly 200 employees who serve approximately 133,000 citizens. The district has remarkable views of the mountains, a lively old town area, and quick access to all the amenities in the Denver metro area.  The area has a rich geographic diversity that includes urban, rural, residential, and commercial areas.

Minimum Qualifications and Certification Requirements:

  1. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  2. Associates degree preferably with coursework in communications, marketing, graphic design or journalism. A degree in other fields of study will be considered provided a combination of technical education and experience provides the required knowledge for the position. Examples of preferred previous experience include marketing, communications, journalism, web design, web content management, social media content management, and public speaking.
  3. Working knowledge in Adobe Creative Cloud.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License, and acceptable driving record.
  5. Possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire or appointment, FEMA Basic Public Information Officer (G290) course.
  6. Possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire or appointment National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications 100, 200, 700 and 800.
  7. Must have excellent communication skills applicable to a range of audiences across diverse platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree preferably with coursework in communications, marketing, graphic design or journalism.  A degree in other fields of study will be considered provided a combination of technical education and experience provides the required knowledge for the position.  Examples of preferred previous experience include marketing, communications, journalism, web design, web content management, social media content management, and public speaking.
  2. Previous professional experience specific to digital media, web content management, graphic design, public relations, and/or a combination thereof.
  3. Previous professional experience in social media communication, content creation and video production.
  4. Previous emergency services experience.
  5. Previous experience working in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
  6. Previous experience working as a Public Information Officer.
