ORGANIZATION

The Women’s Building (TWB) is a women-led community space that advocates self-determination, gender equality and social justice.  Founded in 1971, the organization was the first women-owned and operated community center in the country and has always been guided by the belief that all women and girls have the right to safe, joyous and creative lives. Over the years, The Women’s Building has become a hub for immigrant women and is the first stop in the journey to getting help for the majority of the women the organization serves. From the minute they walk through the front doors, women are welcomed in and have access to experienced staff who conduct an assessment of their needs. Whether community members are utilizing in-house programs such as financial coaching and job search assistance, or gain access to essential social services including a food pantry and housing application assistance program, each and every one of them is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

All of the organization’s program staff, volunteers and interns are bilingual in Spanish and English and the majority have college degrees or some college experience, particularly in the area of gender studies or social work. TWB staff have developed a range of expertise gained from the many community-based programs that have been implemented over the years and its staff/volunteers are highly motivated to work for the improvement of women’s lives.
