General Background

Founded over fifty years ago and headquartered in Tampa, Florida, AMIkids has a mission to protect public safety and positively impact as many youth as possible through the efforts of a diverse and innovative staff. The organization is now a national leader with some 40 programs spread over 9 states with public support and revenue of $75 million. Each of AMIkids’ programs at the local level has a board of trustees made up of local community leaders who help their program make a difference in the lives of the youth they serve. AMIkids works in partnership with youth agencies, local communities and families to achieve their mission. AMIkids receives public support from contracts with states and other entities and is now seeking to expand their development program.

Position Overview

The Vice President of Resource Development needs to be a strategic thinker and doer who can mobilize people within a national and complex organizational structure. This position has a broad scope of responsibility including identification and cultivation of individuals, corporations and foundations that have interest in supporting the work of AMIKids. Additionally, the Vice President of Resource Development must have the ability to provide training and leadership to the executive directors, boards and fundraising staff/volunteers for programs across a nine-state area. He or she will serve as a member of the leadership team and will report to the President and CEO, Mike Thornton.

He or she will provide support to the President of the Foundation Board and the Yacht Donation Program to leverage their contacts. This individual will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications. The Vice President of Resource Development will exhibit strong strategic thinking abilities and have the creative drive needed to seek funding for this organization. The primary focus will be on securing major and principal gifts/funding.


  • Responsibility for planning, implementation and oversight of current fundraising programs which include major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving campaign and planned giving.
  • Effectively work within a complex organization with the ability to multitask and prioritize projects.
  • Proactively build collaborative relationships with key staff and board members of the affiliates and regional programs of AMIkids.
  • Travel as necessary to affiliates/regional programs.  Approximately 20% travel is required.
  • Develop fundraising templates for affiliates and regional programs and provide training to key staff and volunteers on fundraising.
  • Work closely with the Yacht Donation Program to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors to AMIkids.
  • Serve as the top major and principal gift officer in the organization.
  • Responsible for scheduling, planning content, and activity for the Foundation Board meeting.
  • Meet face-to-face with prospective and current donors
  • Serve as the lead in the process that obtains input from senior leadership including the Board of Directors and Foundation Board for priorities in philanthropic projects and identification of prospects.
  • Develop metrics to measure fundraising success.
  • Effectively communicate the status of fundraising to the President and CEO, AMIkids Leadership Team, and the Board of Trustees on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrate positive human relations skills and experience in working with volunteers.
  • Work in partnership with and oversee the Director of Marketing and Communications in the development of a marketing and media plan as it relates to and supports fundraising.
  • Prepare and monitor an operational budget for fundraising.
  • Demonstrate positive human relations skills and experience in working with volunteers.
  • Speak publicly and interpret the organization’s programs, vision, and goals to the community effectively.
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to provide support in a collaborative and team-oriented manner.
  • Hire, train, and manage the staff of the Resource Development and Yacht Donation Program departments.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Professional Qualifications

  • Passion for the mission of AMIkids
  • Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree a plus
  • 6-10 years of professional fundraising experience and community outreach
  • Demonstrated success in securing major and principal gifts/funding
  • Demonstrated success in the development and execution of high level fundraising strategies
  • Strong capabilities in planning and organizing
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
  • Be goal driven and possess a high degree of motivation, maturity and energy
  • Approximately 20% travel is required
