About the Organization:

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) advocates for policies and provides support to nearly 200 immigrant serving and immigrant rights organizations across New York State. We represent the collective interests of New York’s diverse immigrant communities and organizations, and devise solutions to advance them. We advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant communities; NYIC works to empower immigrants, and contribute to the sustainability of those organizations that serve them, in order to improve people’s lives, and strengthen the economic and social contributions of immigrants to New York State (NYS) and the nation.

For over thirty years, NYIC has taken on tough battles for New York State’s immigrant communities, achieving real impact, concrete support, relief, and legislative wins. Highlights over the last two years include:

  • NYS driver’s licenses for all, regardless of immigration status
  • Immigration Protection Act
  • Meaningful engagement in the Census 2020 data collection efforts
  • Leadership role on a national level on protecting, empowering, and advocating immigrants’ issues

Over the last 5 years NYIC has grown to become an influential statewide and national organization, dedicated to expanding our coalition, advocating for and achieving transformative immigration reform, both at the New York State and national levels.

About the Role:

Building on the strong foundation and extraordinary growth and impact developed over the last decade, NYIC’s next Executive Director (ED) will lead the organization through its next chapter. In 2021 and beyond, with the right transformational leadership, NYIC is poised to strengthen and sharpen its work, influence, and impact. The next ED will bring new energy, building new partnerships, relationships, strategy, and thinking to achieve big new wins, like a pathway to legalization for immigrants. The next ED will ensure the organization has the right infrastructure and resources to design and integrate an even broader and more diverse coalition, deepen our influence and impact in New York State and federal policy, engage a broader reach in the community, and have an even bolder voice on the important issues facing our diverse immigrant communities. 

Areas of Leadership: 

  • Vision/ Political & Advocacy Strategy:
    • Lead the advocacy and policy teams to:
      • Set the vision and agenda for the work for the next chapter, leading NYIC to big wins that deliver real change for the community and coalition as a whole;
      • Design a well-developed political and advocacy strategy with long-term perspective, ensuring that NYIC continues to garner community power, respect, and “have a seat at the table” with elected officials and other influential decision-makers at all levels; and
      • Consistently communicate with our membership, demonstrating and reflecting the values, interests, and diversity of the membership in key decisions, strategies, and initiatives.
  • Organizational, Individual & Cultural Development:
    • Lead the executive leadership team to:
      • Continue to build strong and equitable systems and policies which support leadership development, organizational culture, and individual team members;
      • Ensure leadership development and growth opportunities internally and externally;
      • Foster equity and inclusivity across all operations; and
      • Consolidate the organization for the long haul, determining in the meantime how to be a cohesive virtual membership organization through the pandemic.
    • Continue building a board that reflects and represents the coalition and other key constituencies, and effectively partner with the board to ensure the sustainability and vitality of the NYIC.
  • Fundraising:
    • Lead the development team to:
      • Design a strategic fundraising plan and strategy that continues to diversify revenue and partnership opportunities, while ensuring the long term sustainability and vibrancy of the organization;
      • Deepen revenue opportunities at the city, state and federal levels; and Raise $12M in FY 2022.
  • Coalition, Partnership & Relationship Building:
    • Lead the different teams to:
      • Engage even more and new facets of the immigrant community (i.e. youth, BLM, LGBQT+, the business and legal communities);
      • Continue building and strengthening the Statewide coalition, ensuring voices across NY State are represented and engaged; and
      • Maintain NYIC’s place and play an even greater role in the national conversation about immigration policy and reform.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for NYIC’s mission that reflects the values, energy, and diversity of the coalition
  • Significant experience working in immigration policy, advocacy, organizing, or services that support and strengthen immigrant communities
  • Experience leading growing organizations
  • Command of immigration policy issues and of the immigration ecosystem
  • Outstanding in setting a vision, rallying constituencies around it, and effectively leading people to execute
  • Strong skills in political and advocacy strategy and tactics, with a deep understanding of mobilizing, campaigning, and lobbying to leverage an organization’s power
  • Experienced team builder who invests people in a vision, develops and mentors, and builds positive organizational culture
  • Demonstrates a leadership approach driven by empathy, humility, values, and courage
  • Skilled in developing relationships and building partnerships across a wide range of constituents, including funders and elected officials
  • Skilled fundraiser who connects strategy to priorities and programs to revenue
  • Demonstrates clear, strong, inclusive, and sound decision making
  • Experience managing and mobilizing large coalitions
  • Firsthand experience of the immigrant experience is preferred
