TITLE:             Assistant Managing Editor: Copy and Production, Arthritis & Rheumatology journal

Rheumatology

POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Managing Editor, Copy and Production is closely involved in Arthritis & Rheumatology quality control and schedules—managing some activities independently and working closely with the Senior Director, Journals/Managing Editor on others. The Assistant Managing Editor also participates, along with the journal’s Manuscript Editors and Senior Manuscript Editor(s), in copyediting manuscripts for publication in Arthritis & Rheumatology, reading article proofs, and performing other activities related to the journal’s content and production.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise Arthritis & Rheumatology Manuscript Editors and Senior Manuscript Editor(s)
  • Train new editing staff in editorial style and procedures
  • Proactively monitor copyediting and proofing output to ensure high quality, adherence to style and aesthetic standards, and on-time publication
  • Identify, and work with Senior Director, Journals/Managing Editor to address, any problems/issues related to the publisher’s production/composition services
  • Update and maintain copy-related documentation such as the journal style guide
  • Write monthly ACR Announcements as well as occasional features (e.g., biography of new ACR President, ACR Committee Updates)
  • Review and approve monthly Arthritis & Rheumatology table of contents emails and proofread table of contents in each A&R compiled issue proof
  • Review article proofs, creating redummy if necessary
  • With Senior Director, Journals/Managing Editor, develop overall plan for each issue of the journal, including placement of fillers, pagination to assure two-page tables appear as a spread, order of letters
  • Coordinate with Editor-in-Chief in selection of journal cover image and obtain image/description
  • Copyedit manuscripts according to journal style
  • Other duties as assigned by Senior Director, Journals/Managing Editor, Arthritis & Rheumatology or Executive Vice President

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in related field
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in the setting of a peer-reviewed scholarly publication (experience specifically with a medical journal and experience specifically with a professional society journal are strongly preferred)
  • Awareness of current practices and potential future trends in scholarly medical publication
  • Strong familiarity with scientific/medical terminology
  • Ability to edit complex, technical material for internal consistency, sense and logic, and comprehensibility
  • Strong writing skills
