Job Details

The Georgia Justice Project is a 34-year-old non-profit located in Atlanta’s historic Old Fourth Ward neighborhood.  Our mission of criminal justice advocacy and reform spans three areas: Holistic Criminal Defense, Advocacy and Education, and Reentry Lawyering.  GJP’s $2.5 m budget is funded primarily through private donations; 27 staff comprised of lawyers, social workers, legal assistants, development and administrative personnel serve hundreds of Georgians annually. 

GJP is now seeking to dramatically expand our reach. We are looking for a mission-focused, experienced, strategic, and process-minded Operations Manager to work with GJP’s leadership team. This individual will support the executive leadership team on issues related to HR, facilities, operations, and finances. Ideally, the Operations Manager will have experience developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. Additionally, the successful candidate will have significant expertise in functional operational areas ensuring GJP has the capacity to efficiently meet the increase in productivity demanded by its ambitious growth and scale plans.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Impact Director, the Operations Manager will lead internal operations related to HR, facilities, operations, technology, consulting/vendor relationships necessary to support the work of a legal services non-profit.

  • Human Resources (35%)
  • Oversee human resources functions for a growing team including: recruitment, onboarding, training, and professional development.  Support the leadership team in making decisions about compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation and reviews, and career progression.
    • Provide guidance on attracting new talent and developing team members to support GJP’s growth plan.
    • Assist GJP staff with HR information, options, and decisions.
    • Identify HR needs and develop solutions to sustain GJP’s expansion such as training for new managers or tech proficiency plans.
    • Evaluate current HR systems and policies and make recommendations to support GJP’s current and future goals.
    • May serve as project manager/lead on HR or HRIS projects.
    • Responsible for maintaining and updating Employee Handbook, HR Policies, and Procedures.
    • Responsible for compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  Expected to provide guidance and recommendations to reduce or eliminate HR related risks.
    • Assist program managers with fellows, interns and volunteers.
    • Assist with maintaining volunteer management infrastructure as needed.
    Facilities Management (35%)
    • Responsible for maintaining the safety, security and efficient operation of physical space, office infrastructure, and business systems.
    • Assist in planning use of space according to the needs and growth of the organization.
    • May serve as project lead/manager for operations projects.
    • Develop and manage building reservation request system for external sources.
    • Develop and maintain comprehensive operating procedural manuals for all  operations functions and responsibilities
    • Develop and disseminate emergency operation/contingency/redundancy plans for physical safety and technology security.
    • Communicate workplace safety precautions to employees.
    • Maintain asset inventory and control system.
    • May represent GJP in area business groups such as O4WBA.
    Technology (15%)
    • Serve as conduit for staff and IT vendors to assure technology functionality and security needs are met.
    • Help plan for future IT and office equipment needs.
    • Maintain tech asset inventory and control system.
    Finance (15%)
    • Work with GJP’s Bookkeeper and Controller to ensure internal and external reporting, purchasing, and financial obligations are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Conduct regular reviews of non-personnel related expenditures for performance, cost, and contract compliance.

    Key Qualifications

    As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of GJP and be driven by the mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for being part of social change. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate that has proven experience (7+ years) in handling non-profit HR and operations and a demonstrated ability to both work with and support the capabilities of a driven, bright, diverse team.

    The successful candidate will have organizational management experience. As noted, this is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a “values-driven” organization will be highly prized. Additional requirements are:

    • Capacity Building—ability to effectively support a growing organization, highly-capable staff and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly
    • Leadership and Organization-exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; a strengths-based leader and management style.
    • Infrastructure Development - Skilled in reviewing and recommending key systems including HR, administration and technology policies and procedures.
    • Action Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary to achieve results.
    • General Management—thorough understanding of the non-profit environment and the systems needed to support optimal functioning for both employees and stakeholders as the organization grows.   
    • Results-proven track record of meeting and exceeding goals; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.
    • Limited telework opportunities due to the nature of the position.
    • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree highly desired. 
    • Professional certification in HR preferred.
    • MS Office required; knowledge of conferencing technology, payment processing, and various types of databases is advantageous.
