The Bascom is a nonprofit regional arts center in Highlands, North Carolina that creates visual arts experiences with a mission to inspire and empower individuals and communities through seeing, thinking, and doing. With  a 30-year history, The Bascom is the leading provider of diverse, contemporary visual art experiences for residents, visitors, and lifelong learners in the region. Recognized for its quality and uniqueness, as well as the impact of its work in the communities it serves, The Bascom attracts around 25,000 visitors annually. The Bascom is located on an 8 acre campus near downtown Highlands and has a $1.5 million annual budget and a $1.2 million endowment. The Bascom seeks a new Executive Director to lead the organization into the next phase of growth and continued success. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the strategic and operational efficiency of all programs and staff.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors; actively develop and cultivate relations with directors that foster involvement and stability.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction of all program strategy and development.
  • Manage a staff of 7-10 professionals responsible for the following functions: Finance; Development; Exhibitions, Education and Outreach; Marketing; Retail Shop and Venue Management; Ceramics, Facilities
  • Represent the organization and increase public awareness by being the spokesperson and liaison with local media and community organizations.
  • Create an actionable plan for fundraising and serve as the primary fund-raising executive for the organization.
  • Create complete business plans for the attainment of established goals and objectives, working closely with the CFO alongside the Board Treasurer

Ideal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in liberal arts, business, human resources, or NFP administration preferred; advanced degree in business or the arts highly desirable.
  • 7+ years of management experience with increasing responsibilities, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, ideally with an arts-related organization.
  • Strong public relations and experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated strategic and successful fundraising experience.
  • Proven success working with a board of directors.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and visual communication skills and demonstrated public speaking ability.
