Community Voices Heard

United Today Stronger Tomorrow

Digital and Distributive Organizer

(Part-Time)

Overview of Position and Project: Community Voices Heard (CVH) working in partnership with United Today Stronger Tomorrow - Communities Respond to COVID (UTST), is seeking a part-time digital and distributive organizer to work 24 hours/week to build a digital and distributive organizing program focused on people impacted by COVID in New York State. The Organizer will be hired by CVH and will work closely with the team at UTST to develop, run, and evaluate ads and other digital and on-line strategies to recruit people, engage them in on-line and off-line action, and move them into organizing campaigns.

The goal of this joint CVH- and UTST-project is to build an active and new membership base of people who have been impacted by COVID, work with this base to identify the top issues they want to address, and then work with organizing staff to move new members up the ladder of engagement while identifying a new campaign(s) to address their issues. This project will focus on targeting mostly women of color in NYC and the Hudson Valley.

Job Responsibilities: The Digital and Distributive Organizer will:

  • Help develop digital content in collaboration with CVH and UTST for digital ads and social media posts.

Place ads and track their performance, including generating reports, captured contact information, and follow-up.

Identify and implement other strategies for digital list-building, including working with other organizations, service providers, and community groups.

Work with CVH and UTST to develop and manage a plan to move people through the ladder of engagement process including one-on-ones, virtual house and organizing meetings, webinars, and informational sessions.

Work with organizers to provide support and training to people who want to organize locally.

Craft, build, and manage the digital strategy for the program.

Produce creative content, including videos, that lift up stories about people and communities impacted by COVID.

Teach, support, and engage staff and members of CVH around digital organizing strategies.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years experience working with digital tools in an organizing/base-building setting in which they played a central role building lists and moving people into action, specifically off-line action. We are also looking for a candidate who likes to work in fast paced environments, is comfortable with experimentation and responding rapidly to changes “on the ground”, works well with a diverse set of people and institutions, and thrives working in start-up projects with others. The candidate should have:

  • Keen analytical skills.

Experience and ability to target, engage, and organize across racial and cultural lines.

Proven ability to target and engage women of color on digital platforms.

Experience in community, labor, and/or political organizing.

Experience working in a grassroots membership organization or other type of social justice organization.

Vision and a commitment to unapologetically building power with low income communities of color.

Excellent analytical writing and oral communication skills.

The capacity to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

An ability to speak a second language (Spanish or Haitian-Creole).

An ability and interest in learning how to manage and leverage new digital platforms quickly.

Experience with at least one CRM such as ActionNetwork, ActionKit, CiviCRM, and/or Salesforce.

Women, people of color, native/indigenous people, and LGBTQ+ people are strongly encouraged to apply. Strong preference for Spanish speaking proficiency.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to jobs@unitedtoday.org that includes why you are interested in this position and how your experience can help build the project.

Compensation: Compensation for this part-time position is $1,000/week.

Community Voices Heard is a member-led multi-racial organization, principally women of color and low-income families in New York State that builds power to secure racial, social, and economic justice for all. Founded in 1994 by welfare recipients in New York City working to fight unjust welfare policies, they have since expanded to include working on seminal issues across New York State. Core organizing issues include: fighting for truly affordable housing, a just social safety net, good jobs and access to them, criminal justice reform, immigration reform and a participatory democracy.

United Today, Stronger Tomorrow is a national pilot project that identifies constituencies and institutions impacted by COVID and tests innovative organizing efforts to connect them to both short-term work developing and implementing equitable COVID response policies and longer-term advocacy work that will create a more democratic, equitable, racially just, healthy, and environmentally sustainable post-COVID world. We are currently developing projects in NY, IN, CO, and a regional project in the upper Midwest.
