Position Summary

The Public Health Alliance of Southern California (Alliance), is seeking a full-time Health Equity Coordinator, Black Maternal Child Health to support Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies, a multi-sector initiative led by the Alliance, Communities Lifting Communities, and the Hospital Association of Southern California, to reduce Black infant mortality and improve patient experiences and safety for Black moms and birthing people in Los Angeles. The project may expand to include additional Southern California counties.

The Health Equity Coordinator, Black Maternal Child Health will play a key role in the continued implementation and strategic development for Cherished Futures and will help advance birth justice for Black families in Los Angeles and other Southern California counties through systems change.

The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate of health equity and racial justice and think creatively and boldly about how to drive systems change. The Health Equity Coordinator, Black Maternal Child Health will be well versed in coalition and partnership development, and have strong presentation, writing, and facilitation skills.

The Health Equity Coordinator, Black Maternal Child Health will also support Alliance colleagues, local health departments and equity partners to leverage opportunities that address barriers to equity through institutional change, policy change, programmatic operations and protocols, community outreach and engagement, data and research.

This is a remote, full-time position based in Southern California (Los Angeles preferred) and the candidate will work primarily from their home office.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Alliance’s Perinatal Equity Manager, in partnership with Communities Lifting Communities and the Hospital Association of Southern California, to coordinate the design and continued successful implementation of Cherished Futures to advance equitable birth outcomes for Black birthing families
  • Support the planning and development of Cherished Futures collaborative convenings with participating hospital teams, public health, health plans, and Black women community leaders
  • Coordinate with health plan partners to understand where women receive pre-natal care, identify high volume clinics and providers
  • Support qualitative analysis of multiple clinic and provider current practices. This may be in the form of one-on-one interviews, focus groups, surveys, etc., and help develop reports on key findings and recommendations
  • Support project expansion in new regions, identifying and engaging new partners
  • Support community engagement efforts (e.g. sister circles) in partnership with Black-led Community Based Organizations to inform hospital improvement efforts
  • Represent the Alliance and Cherished Futures at external meetings
  • Assist in developing project materials including reports, blog posts, newsletters, and other collateral materials
  • Post pandemic, this position is expected to travel to various locations in the Southern California region (approximately 2-3x per month)

Minimum Qualifications

  • First and foremost, a thorough understanding, sensitivity, and appreciation for equity and racial justice, cultural humility, and inclusiveness
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Care Administration, Gender/Ethnic Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience
  • 3 years of relevant professional experience (preferably in policy advocacy or systems change efforts) including experience working in or with Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, in or with government entities, executive and clinical leaders, facilitating meetings, measuring and monitoring program evaluation activities and working in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, and multi-sectoral partnerships
  • A portion of the 3 years may include relevant experience through personal, family, or other lived experience dealing with inequitable economic, social, health and educational systems and environments or through a combination of education and experience
  • Excellent research and writing skills, including the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into succinct summaries and reports
  • Strong group facilitation skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Post pandemic, must have available transportation and ability to commute to various locations in the Southern California region for light daytime travel (approximately 2-3x per month)

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Care Administration, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Experience developing and delivering trainings on health and race equity, structural racism, and the social determinants of health is strongly preferred
  • Experience with data collection and translating data into understandable information
  • Experience working in or with government, health care, or community-based setting preferred
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage start-up initiatives, design project plans, and implement activities
  • Knowledgeable of the Black maternal and infant mortality crisis nationally and in Los Angeles County
  • Understanding of building authentic community partnerships
  • Knowledgeable about the role of racism and bias in healthcare and other root causes of health inequities
  • Determination to achieve outcomes, complete tasks, and deliver on professional commitments
  • Sensitivity to varied interests of many stakeholders, partners, advocates, elected officials, and colleagues
  • Ability to work with autonomy in a fast-paced, high productivity environment
  • Commitment to Southern California communities experiencing health equity challenges

Important Information

  • This is a full-time position (40 hours per week)
  • This is a fully remote position, and the individual chosen for this position will be expected to work from their home office
  • The selected candidate must live in the Southern California region, even with the current pandemic situation, as we expect this position to require light daytime travel (2-3x per month) in the future. To that end, we will not consider candidates who are located outside of Southern California
