The Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center (CREEC) is seeking an accomplished fundraising professional to be our Director of Development and Communications. This is an exciting opportunity to lead CREEC’s fundraising and development alongside an enthusiastic and successful team of civil rights lawyers and advocates.

Our Mission

CREEC is a legal nonprofit and membership organization. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can fully and independently participate in our nation’s civic life without discrimination based on race, gender, disability, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We are widely recognized for systemic change litigation and for education and support for lawyers, advocates, and individuals working in our areas of practice.

Our Work

CREEC pursues our mission through education, advocacy, and individual and class action lawsuits. We represent individuals on a range of civil rights issues, but focus on the rights of people with disabilities and on the rights of people detained in immigration detention centers and prisons. Our cases in these areas include a class action against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) challenging its decision to confine immigration detainees in a federal prison; multiple class actions challenging conditions of confinement in prisons and detention centers; systemic litigation on behalf of deaf people seeking effective communication in medical and carceral settings; and class actions challenging physical barriers for people who use wheelchairs.

We also have a number of educational projects, ranging from one-time webinars and continuing legal education courses to our ongoing “help desk” projects, providing technical assistance in the areas of disability rights and immigration detention conditions to other lawyers, advocates, and interested parties.

Based in Denver, Berkeley, Nashville, and Los Angeles, our scope is nationwide. Through our advocacy and litigation, CREEC has successfully transformed the practices of major companies and government entities. We have been recognized with awards for our work and numerous newspapers and media organizations – including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Forbes, CNN, NPR, the Denver Post, and Westword, among many others – have written about our work.

More information on the organization and our cases can be found on our website, www.creeclaw.org

We believe that the clients we represent, our mission, our work, and our accomplishments provide a compelling narrative for development efforts. The right person for this position shares our passion for civil rights and is excited at the opportunity to build upon a successful and growing development program.

Many of our cases are on behalf of people in urgent circumstances, for example, deaf people in need of prompt medical attention but being denied interpreters; detained immigrants facing mental or medical health crises; and prisoners confronting inaccessible systems. As a result, the work at CREEC can be intense. For this reason—and because we’re all pretty cool people—we strive for a friendly, congenial workplace, which we try to foster through weekly office lunches, taking the staff out for drinks, and, during the pandemic, Zoom happy hours. We work hard, but try not to take ourselves too seriously. In pre-pandemic times—when we worked in the same physical space—we were joined by several office dogs.
