Job Details

The Eviction Prevention Project of the Georgia Legal Services Program is seeking to hire nine Housing Navigators to work with families in Georgia to help them maintain their rental housing and prevent eviction.  On behalf of clients receiving legal representation from a GLSP attorney, the Housing Navigators will prepare and submit applications for clients seeking financial assistance to pay past due rent and utilities necessary to prevent eviction from their rental housing.  They will also assist clients in accessing public benefits and other resources that promote housing stability.  Currently, GLSP employees are working remotely. However, it may be necessary for Navigators to make arrangements to meet with clients in person at the local GLSP office following health and safety requirements.

The Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to provide civil legal services for persons with low incomes, create equal access to justice and opportunities out of poverty.  GLSP’s Eviction Prevention Project (EPP) provides legal assistance to qualifying low-income tenants of private landlords. The Housing Navigators will be located in GLSP’s Regional Offices in Augusta, Albany, Brunswick, Dalton, Columbus, Athens, Piedmont, Macon, and Savannah.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Interview clients and determine threshold eligibility for rental assistance by applying program rules and policies.
  • Assist eligible clients by preparing applications for rental assistance including verifying and documenting eligibility, submit application for internal approval, and transmit application for final approval to the Department of Community Affairs.
  • Communicate effectively with the GLSP attorney representing the client, the Eviction Prevention Project Program Manager, and GLSP’s contact with the Department of Community Affairs.
  • Assess client’s eligibility for public benefit programs and, using COMPASS, assist clients in applying for such benefits.
  • Thoroughly and accurately document in the client’s case file every contact with client, action taken on the client’s behalf, and referral; adding to the electronic file all relevant documents.
  • Accurately enter the required information into the HMIS database, as required by program rules and policies.
  • Provide case management and counseling; assisting clients in developing an individualized plan for gaining housing stability.
  • Actively participate in case conferences, staff meetings, service coordination meetings, supervision, professional and in-service training sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or GED required; some college preferred but not required.
  • At least one-year work experience in an administrative or support position.
  • Bilingual skills highly valued.
  • Because the Navigator will be working remotely, until GLSP staff returns to their offices, the Navigator must have internet access.
  • The Navigator needs to be skilled in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and web meeting software such as Zoom.
  • Strong people skills and ability to work effectively and compassionately with people of varying racial, ethnic, cultural, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Good organization skills and detail-oriented; ability to manage multiple cases efficiently and effectively.
  • Must have strong time management skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Salary starts at $30,000 but is dependent upon experience and qualifications. GLSP offers excellent fringe benefits.  A resume, cover letter, and writing sample should be submitted to https://www.glsp.org/join-the-team/. If you have a location preference, please state that in your cover letter.

GLSP invites all applicants to include in their cover letter a statement about how your unique background and/or experiences might contribute to the diversity, cultural vitality, and perspective of our staff and legal services practice.  GLSP is an Affirmative Action/ Equal Opportunity Employer. It is the policy of Georgia Legal Services Program not to discriminate against any applicant for employment because of race, color, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, medical condition, national origin, disability, marital or other protected status. GLSP values a diverse work environment and strongly encourages women, people of color, people who identify as LGBTQ, people with disabilities, and people who have experienced poverty or homelessness to apply.
