Job Details

Reports To: Director of Organizing Projects
FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Location: Washington DC Area (Maryland/Bordering Virginia)

Position Summary:
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the state level, pushing for regulatory changes at the national level, through the International Labor Organization at the global level, and elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 60 affiliates, 4 chapters and a growing list of other worker organizing projects in more than 20 states.

In the spring of 2017, the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) launched a new organizing project in the Washington D.C. area to engage the 100,000 estimated domestic workers who live in the area and who are still without basic labor protections. In the next year, our goal is to transform this organizing project into a local NDWA chapter in Washington D.C. The project is currently staffed by a local Organizer and a committee of dedicated worker leaders. This position will add capacity to the existing organizing infrastructure to continue to grow our base, develop strong domestic worker leaders while also developing and running successful legislative campaigns. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player with excellent campaign development skills who is driven and able to function in a fast-paced work environment.

The primary focus of the Organizer’s work will be to develop and implement campaign plans that include a vigorous organizing strategy in order to win worker protections such as the inclusion of domestic workers in discrimination and sexual harassment laws. The organizer will also develop a leadership development internship program to continue to grow our local capacity. They will engage local workers in national leadership trainings as well as modify training to include local political analysis and develop leaders’ organizing skills. The Organizer will also support National Domestic Worker Bill of Rights actions and mobilizations.

This position will be part of NDWA’s field, membership and organizer teams. Locally, they will work and support our existing Organizer who has thus far built a base of active domestic workers who are meeting monthly and actively participate in leading our D.C. campaign. In addition, the Organizer will work in close coordination and collaboration with partner organizations, allies and supporters in general in the Washington D.C area.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategies and roadmap to advance legislative campaign such as the inclusion of Washington D.C. workers in laws that protect them against sexual harassment and discrimination.
  • Develop strong network of support and solidarity with other local organizations, possibly build coalitions as necessary.
  • Build an organizing leadership program to build a base of NDWA members in the Washington D.C. area including:
    • Conduct mapping of new outreach regions (including areas of domestic worker and employer density, domestic worker serving organizations, key media outlets)
    • Implement an outreach plan that utilizes both online and offline tools to engage domestic workers
    • Develop organizing campaigns for this particular region based on learning in the mapping phase
    • Identify and provide support for worker leaders in the region to develop worker committees
  • Grow the chapter's infrastructure and programming
  • Coordinate team members and supervise staff if necessary
  • Grow the chapters infrastructure
  • Produce reports on progress made and learnings about the field in Washington D.C area.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

  • 4+ years experience in an organizer role in a social justice organization
  • Advanced experience with campaign development
  • Supervision experience
