About the position: The Manager of Media Relations and Storytelling will collaborate with the VP, Marketing & Communications, the Director of Marketing & Communications and the Senior Manager of Social Media and Digital Content, as well as teams across the organization to support an innovative and integrated communications strategy through media outreach and storytelling that builds and distinguishes the First Book brand as a household name among its target audiences including media; Industry influencers; potential and current corporate partners, supporters/donors and educators. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
1.    Develop and execute a strategic, creative media relations effort to tell the First Book story.
•    Build and leverage targeted media relationships across channels
•    Develop effective storylines and proof points for pitching stories to media
•    Pitch stories around thought leadership, Research & Insights, Accelerator resources, key campaigns and more
•    Respond to incoming media requests
•    Prepare First Book spokespeople to respond to media with briefing materials and message points
•    Coordinate interviews and follow up as needed
•    Track media coverage, add to website, share across organization and among key audiences, compile reporting
•    Explore opportunities for bylined article/op-ed pieces and ghost write for First Book spokespeople

2.    Create and manage a creative and efficient storytelling process to showcase First Book’s impact
•    Create a process to collect, write and catalog compelling stories of impact that illustrate the organization’s work and impact  to be used by the MarComm team as well as teams across the organization as proof points for our impact
•    Work with teams across the organization to uncover the most powerful stories of impact for use with media, potential funders/donors, corporate partners, foundations and influencers.

3.    As part of the Marketing and Communications team, support First Book’s overall marketing strategy -- a cross-platform, measurable and effective communications effort
•    Using storytelling skills, work with MarComm team as well as partners across the organization, to manage and develop printed and digital collateral, including presentations, sell-sheets, one-pagers and annual report
•    Support the organization on the following:

o    Speechwriting (as needed; to assist executive team)
o    Provide assistance, as needed, for Canadian team in message development and branding

•    Track and manage project deliverables, ensuring on-time delivery
•    Apply expert project management skills to establish and reorder priorities as needed to accommodate the dynamic nature of our work, both generally and given First Book’s rapid growth 
•    Account for project costs, with variance to budget if appropriate
•    Be available for execution support and oversight outside of designated business hours, should the need arise, and proactively check for communication
•    Assist, as needed, on supervision of outside graphics and PR professionals

4.    Build personal marketing knowledge and expertise:
•    Stay curious about trends and developments in media relations, storytelling, and non-profit marketing, watching other similar organizations for examples 
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
•    A storyteller with excellent written and verbal communications skills, including writing and editing effective and compelling copy for a wide variety of channels and audiences
•    Significant experience in media relations with expertise seeking relevant reporters, how best to reach them and convey the value of the First Book story
•    Ability to perform quality work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently 
•    Ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues on various teams, across different levels of seniority
•    A commitment to social justice

Education and/or Experience: 
•    Five or more years of experience in media relations, storytelling and communications 
•    Various technical skills are strongly preferred: online content management, graphic design and layout, and desktop publishing  
•    A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in marketing, business, communications, or a related field.
