STAND Trainer

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: 32773

Salary: $5,167 - $13,233 monthly

Position Description:

The leaders of the UCLA Depression Grand Challenge, a campuswide initiative, which has the ambitious goal of cutting the global burden of depression in half by 2050, seek to hire an individual with an advanced degree (MA, PsyD, PhD or EdD) in a mental health field such as psychology, social work, community health, or related field or equivalent experience to serve as a STAND Trainer. Under the pillar focused on innovative treatment, led by Professor Michelle Craske, the Depression Grand Challenge has created a new system of care that leverages online cognitive behavioral therapy delivered in conjunction with certified coaches for individuals suffering from mild or moderate depression of anxiety. The program is called the Screening and Treatment for Anxiety and Depression (also knowns as STAND or STAND System of Care). In this system of care, traditional clinical treatment between an individual and clinician is reserved for only those individuals with severe depression or suicidality. Participants' mood is tracked and treatment is adjusted to be responsive to the participants' needs. This system of care was piloted on the UCLA campus from 2017 through 2020, and in the upcoming year will be demonstrated in other settings both in its system of care format as well as in a new format designed in response to COVID-19 with services offered to particular communities for individuals for prevention, mild and moderate anxiety and depression (called STAND For All).

The training program for coaches is robust and over the summer, 200 coaches (mostly undergraduate students) were trained remotely with multiple sessions per week. The Depression Grand Challenge is expanding its reach and programming and one aspect of this expansion is coaching people from a variety of settings including community colleges and local communities. The demand to train more individuals in a scalable fashion drove the creation of this new position: the STAND Trainer. The ideal candidate for the STAND Trainer is a person experienced with cognitive behavioral therapy. This individual has prior experience with in developing and delivering training of complex principles and skills in an artful and culturally sensitive manner. The responsibilities of the STAND Trainer fall into three core functions: (1) deliver training & assure competency; (2) content creation & content management; and (3) administrative.

As part of the delivering training and assuring competency functions, the Trainer will provide Depression Grand Challenge training in evidence-based interventions, for various audiences including community members becoming coaches, college students and licensed providers; conduct, and assist in the evaluation of trainees during and following the sessions; and after becoming fluent in the body of existing training materials, make determinations regarding how to optimally deliver such trainings and assure competency of trainees.

As part of the content and creation management duties, the STAND Trainer is responsible for maintaining, reviewing and refining content in response to feedback regarding training and/or experiences of trainees in providing coaching or services and identified gaps or expanded subject matter.

As part of the administrative duties, the STAND Trainer will engage in miscellaneous tasks related to tracking coach and professionals' progress through progressive training and tracking requested data that might be shared with partner organizations regarding the trainees recruited from their organizations.

This position is expected to be performed remotely until at least mid-March 2021.
