MANAGER, RACE COUNTS

Position Summary: In 2017, Advancement Project California (along with our partners California Calls, PICO California, and USC’s Program for Environmental and Regional Equity) launched the RACE COUNTS initiative and an online interactive tool (www.racecounts.org). RACE COUNTS is a comprehensive research and policy-analysis platform that tracks racial disparities across the state. Through cutting-edge, rigorous analysis, RACE COUNTS ranks all of California’s counties across seven key issue areas: Democracy, Economic Opportunity, Crime & Justice, Health Care Access, Healthy Built Environments, Education, and Housing. The primary goal of this project is to develop research and analysis that support community-led initiatives to transform antiquated public systems that have long oppressed California’s communities of color
As a member of the Office of Strategic Initiatives, the Race Counts Manager will report to the Senior Advisor. The Race Counts Manager will support the Senior Advisor and the Race Counts Steering Committee to: 1) design and sustain a statewide outreach and training program; 2) manage the initiative’s on-going research and policy development agenda; and 3) support partners’ advocacy campaigns including, the development of research briefs to support community organizers and leaders. The successful applicant must have a strong, demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice, documented project management skills, a record of accomplishment overseeing multiple streams of work at the same time, be self-motivated, flexible, and great at fostering creative and collaborative spaces.
Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and implement a statewide outreach and training program in coordination with partner organizations.
• Serve as primary point of contact to coordinate presentation and training requests. The Manager may serve as the primary presenter/trainer. Additionally, the Manager will provide coordination support for others who may be speaking on behalf of the initiative including, but not limited to the Executive Director, Senior Advisor, other Advancement Project staff, or Steering Committee partners.
• Provide strong project management and coordination of all RACE COUNTS research, policy development, communications, and partner engagement efforts.
• Serve as primary liaison between Advancement Project California and RACE COUNTS partners whether they be local or statewide community-based advocates or governmental leaders.
• Support the Senior Advisor, Executive Director and Advancement Project California staff in managing cross-programmatic initiatives (specifically related to RACE COUNTS) and support internal staff capacity-building efforts to integrate and leverage RACE COUNTS data in their work.
• Coordinate the development of content in support of internal and external communications efforts.
• Participate in organization-wide planning, development, and communication activities, as needed and ensure adherence to Advancement Project California’s goals and policies.

• Sincere and demonstrated commitment to advancing racial equity and economic justice for the highest need communities.
• 5+ years of experience in public policy advocacy, research and/or community-based organizing (beyond summer or short-term internships). Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties may be considered.
• 3+ years of project management experience.
• Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in public policy, law, or the social sciences preferred.
• Strong public speaking and training skills.
• Experience with state and county government policies and processes preferred.
• Experience building and working in coalitions, including managing partnerships with residents and community organizations.
• Strong interpersonal, communications, facilitation, and presentation skills – experience translating technical analyses into accessible advocacy messages are especially preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing complex projects that are strategic in nature and scope.
• Proven ability to collaborate and work with diverse communities, leaders, and staff.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Excellent analytic and research skills.
• Excellent computer skills, proficient with MS Office Applications and virtual meeting software.
• Flexibility to adjust and contribute to continually evolving work situations and changing priorities.
• Ability to take on responsibilities independently with only general supervision.
• Ability to multi-task under deadlines and work well under pressure.
• Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to execute projects on time and on budget.
• Must be able to travel nationally, statewide and/or locally on occasion.
Occasionally must be able to move office supplies and equipment weighing up to 15 pounds across the office or during events.
