Job Details

Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a 501(c)(3) national association of 120 organizations dedicated to advancing justice and democracy. For over forty years, AFJ has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of the courts, fight for a more equitable society on behalf environmental, consumer, civil and women’s rights, immigrant, and health groups, and fight the racism embedded in our justice system. Alliance for Justice is premised on the belief that all Americans have the right to secure justice in the courts and to have their voices heard when government makes decisions that affect their lives.

AFJ has two primary programs:

  • Our Justice Program focuses on ensuring that the federal judiciary advances core constitutional values, preserves human rights and unfettered access to the courts, and adheres to the even-handed administration of justice for all;

  • Our Bolder Advocacy Program that works with nonprofits and foundations to help them navigate the rules surrounding 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PACs so they can be more courageous in their advocacy.

Alliance for Justice Action Campaign (AFJAC), an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization, promotes the importance of the courts with a goal of advancing core constitutional values, preserving human rights, securing unfettered access to the judicial system, and guaranteeing the even-handed administration of justice. AFJAC also serves as the nation’s leading resource on the legal framework for 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy efforts. While driven by the same core values of an independent and fair judiciary, and nonprofit advocacy, AFJ and AFJAC are independent organizations and have separate boards.

About the Position

Alliance for Justice and Alliance for Justice Action Campaign seek a Director of Finance (Director) to lead the Finance Department during a time of critical importance for our democracy. As a member of the senior management team at both organizations, the Director will be a strategic thought partner working closely with AFJ/AFJAC’s Executive and Development Teams, program directors, and Board(s) in support of the following areas: finance, planning, and budget development.  The Director will also play a role in partnering with senior management on fiscal operations, including expense management, productivity, accounting and industry trends and analysis. The Director will also help oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting, as well as financial compliance for all AFJ and AFJAC grants and contracts. In short, this is a unique opportunity for an individual to strengthen the financial analysis, capacity, and operations of one of the Nation’s leading social justice non-profits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, analyze, and clearly present financial reports and annual financial statements in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Coordinate and lead AFJ/AFJAC’s annual audit and 990 process, working with outside auditors and the Board’s Audit and Finance Committees.
  • Work with the Vice President of Programs and Operations to lead and conduct the annual budget process, oversee the monthly statements for program directors, and develop financial metrics.
  • Develop and present, in consultation with the Vice President, financial and cash forecasts and provide updates to the Board Finance Committee, the Board, and the President on a regular basis.
  • Supervise cash flow and oversee internal controls, and work with the bookkeeper to monitor expenditures, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and credit card reimbursements.
  • Ensure that AFJ/AFJAC meet their statutory requirements including: filing 990s, charitable status, withholding payments, and employer health benefits, among others.
  • Work with the Development Team to provide accurate financial grant reports and updates to foundations.
  • Liaise with AFJ’s investment management firm, monitor the performance of AFJ’s investment portfolio, and ensure compliance with AFJ’s investment policy.
  • Monitor and oversee AFJ’s employee 401(k) investment accounts.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Seven to ten years of professional experience managing the finances of a national nonprofit organization with a budget in the range of $5-10 million.
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in accounting or business (MA or MBA preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and non-profit accounting.
  • Proficiency in accounting and timesheet software QuickBooks, Excel, and Zenefits (desirable).
  • Strong financial analysis skills and nonprofit grants management experience.
  • Strong speaking skills and comfort presenting complex financial information to the Board in person and via phone.
  • Flexible, self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience in operations management (preferred).

Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and alignment with AFJ’s values and mission
