Title: Program Assistant internship (paid) – professional association of environmental philanthropy

Type: 3 to 5 days per week (depending on scheduling needs of the ideal candidate),

Fall-winter 2020-2021

Salary: $22/hr.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Founded in 1987 and located in San Francisco’s Presidio, the Biodiversity Funders Group (BFG) is a professional association of grantmakers with a shared vision for a sustainable, just and healthy future for all life on Earth, advanced by a vibrant and effective philanthropic sector.

With an annual budget of $1.9M and a staff of nine, BFG hosts conferences, briefings, and other educational offerings such as webinars throughout the year. These gatherings and exchanges are in pursuit of maximizing the impact of environmental philanthropy through four goals: sharing knowledge and strategies, cultivating partnerships, identifying needs and emerging issues, creating avenues for leadership.

POSITION OVERVIEW

BFG seeks to provide a paid internship that may support the career advancement of a promising person interested in the environment, philanthropy, or nonprofit organizations.

The intern will provide programmatic and administrative support to the various programs of BFG. Responsibilities include:

●               Virtual conference organizing: Help organize and execute webinars and virtual conferences. Tasks may include drafting of meeting notes, agenda development, logistical coordination with attendees and speakers, and management of virtual conferencing platforms such as Zoom.

●               Member engagement: conduct research to better understand how our members use our services and what changes or additions in our offerings would create more value. Develop reports or other written materials for internal or external use.

●               Administration, communications, and recordkeeping: Update membership data and contact information, assist with grant applications and reporting, work on newsletters, and work on compiling and managing other internal information.

●               Provide an extra hand for other program activities or take on special projects, as assigned

The intern will work closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations, and other team members.

COVID-19 note: For the safety of its staff, BFG’s work is now mostly conducted through remote work. The intern will also be expected to work from home, while we will do our best to keep rich communications online. Candidates locally residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as those living elsewhere, are welcome to apply.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

●               General computer competence, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets, and similar applications (familiarity with desktop publishing or content management a plus); ability to learn and work with new software.

●               Excellent written and verbal communication skills (expertise in editing and/or proofreading a plus).

●               Familiarity with general office administration.

●               Exceptional time-management skills, with proven ability to proactively manage multiple tasks in different teams with poise and grace.

●               Critical thinking, willingness to speak out, and the desire to contribute to the improvement of the organization.

Please note that candidates with a general interest in learning how nonprofit organizations work will be positively valued. An interest or expertise specific to environmental issues is not a requirement, but a plus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

●               Ability to act as a facilitator or moderator in conference calls.

●               Experience in coordinating or supporting the logistics of conferences or other events.

●               Experience in community outreach, grants management, customer service, public relations, or donor relations for nonprofit or membership organizations.

●               Experience in research and report writing.

The selection will be based on an assessment of skill and potential, which the candidates can demonstrate with any suitable combination of education or experiences. There is no fixed minimum requirement on formal education.

Experience in volunteering activities and other extracurricular activities is valued and can be counted towards the above experience qualifications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

●               Ability to work from home

●               Required to sit for long periods of time.

●               Extensive use of a Mac computer (provided by BFG), keyboard and mouse

●               Bend to file or retrieve documents

●               Occasional light physical effort required

●               Ability to lift and carry up to approximately 30 pounds

TIME REQUIRED: A minimum of 24 hours per week (equivalent to 3 full days of work), and up to full time. The internship starts on or around November 2nd, 2020 with a duration of at least three months, and preferably six (through April). In order to better accommodate the other responsibilities and commitments the intern may have, BFG offers flexibility in the duration of the internship and the weekly schedule.

COMPENSATION: $22/hour. As a temporary position, this internship has no healthcare or other benefits.
