Job Details

Main Functions:        

The Kindergarten Educator will be responsible for meeting the educational and developmental needs of 10 children assigned to the Kindergarten classroom through daily and weekly planning of age appropriate lessons and activities. The educator will need to be able to implement and monitor activities that encourage, promote and spark the interest and joy of learning for all the students assigned to this environment in an engaging manner. The educator should ensure that health and safety measures are met at all times in regards to safety, hygiene, nutrition, first-aid care, and social and emotional nurturing to the Kindergarten students.  The educator will be responsible for developing weekly lesson plans to introduce young children to the basic principles of literacy (early reading and writing skills), math, music and art, science, social studies, and help to promote their physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. Lesson plans should include cognitive skills such as sequencing and matching, social skills in similarities and diversity, and support language arts skills educating the students using a global perspective. The educator will help the students gain independent reasoning skills and prepare them for their future academic success. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops weekly/monthly lesson plans utilizing the Teaching Strategies® curriculum to create experiences that are age appropriate for children.
  • Participates in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assists with designing and maintaining an age appropriate room arrangement to support the goals and varying developmental levels of the children within the classroom.
  • Interacts with children to promote play, exploration, and learning.
  • Promotes language development and self-confidence through storytelling, drama, music and movement, as well as, facilitate individual and/or group discussions.
  • Provides adequate supervision and monitors the children by sight and sound using only positive interaction, redirection, and safe play.
  • Attends a minimum of ten (10) hours state required training, which includes first –aid, health and safety, and indoor & outdoor supervision, along with ten (10) hours of required training in trauma informed care, customer service,  and nurturing and proper care.
  • Assesses the first 30 days of school and every (6) months each child using the Kindergarten Brigance® assessment tools.
  •  Conducts daily observations and completing checkpoint reports at the period end.
  •  Facilitates parent-teacher conferences at each checkpoint period and on an as needed basis.
  •  Communicates with parents using a variety of mediums (verbally, in writing, electronically or by phone).
  •  Works with volunteers and provides adequate instruction and supervision during activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Abilities

A.  Education: Master or Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching Certificate are the minimum qualifications.

B.  Training and Experience:  One to five years preferred work experience in direct care of children from Birth to age eight (8). Awareness of trauma informed care and social and emotional health of young children. Understanding of N.A.E.Y.C. and Bright From the Start health and safety policies and standards.

C. Other Qualifications:  Excellent organizational and communication skills.  Must have a working knowledge of computer skills, basic record keeping, and office procedures. Exhibits qualities that reflect the Atlanta Children’s Shelter mission, goals and values.
