Coordinator of Student Field Programs - UC Berkeley Labor Center - Institute for Research on Labor and Employment

The UC Berkeley Labor Center is a public service and outreach program of the UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. The Labor Center conducts research and education on issues related to labor and employment. We provide timely, policy-relevant research on labor and employment issues for policymakers and stakeholders, and conduct training, educational, and leadership development programs for a new, diverse generation of worker leaders and students.

The Labor Center seeks applications for the Coordinator of Student Field Programs position. Under the supervision of the Center's Director of Student Programming, the appointee will advance the Labor Center's student practice opportunities including research, internships, and service-learning experiences. They will achieve this goal by strengthening and expanding the Center's collaborative partnerships with external labor and community stakeholders through research training for students and external stakeholder members/staff, placement of students, and support in mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. The appointee will be responsible for supporting the field components of UC Berkeley's labor studies classes, including research and other labor community-engaged experiences. The appointee will be responsible for recruiting and matching diverse students with external partners, and training, assessing, and mentoring students to ensure both rigorous learning experiences and value-addition to community partners. The appointee will also be responsible for recruiting, training in applied research, and helping external community partners develop projects that are feasible and appropriate for students, and for assessing and supporting site supervisors for partnership success. The appointee will be classified as a “Coordinator of Public Programs” at 100% time with an expected start date of December 1, 2020.

The appointee's main responsibilities are to:
● Strengthen the Labor Center's current field programs for students, service learning and research opportunities in Labor Studies classes and independent student research projects.
● Design and conduct training in applied research for participants of the Labor Center's external stakeholders and students.
● Carry out campus outreach to recruit students, in collaboration with the Labor Center's advisory board, other faculty, university bodies, and student organizations.

● Assess the needs and capacities of the labor community's stakeholders in order to develop new and strengthen existing partnerships, help partners identify research and other needs, match students to host sites, and provide mentorship to both students and external community supervisors.
● Identify and develop evaluation tools for student internship and service learning programs through student/participant evaluations and assessment of the level of student interest.
● Track student participation, performance, and post-training career trajectories. Develop and maintain an alumni relations program.
● Participate in long-range strategic planning for the Labor Center's student programs.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application)
● Possession of Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application;

Additional Qualifications (By start date)
● At least three (3) years of professional work experience, at least one (1) of which is with a labor-oriented organization.

Preferred Qualifications (By start date)
● Strong familiarity with major issues facing labor in California.
● Possession of Master's Degree, or international equivalent, in Sociology, Labor Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field.
● At least five (5) years working in any combination related to the fields of labor education, labor research or organizing.
● Demonstrated expertise in labor education, research design in relevant areas, and student mentorship.
● Demonstrated experience in developing, leading, facilitating and evaluating training programs for audiences at different levels of understanding.
● Demonstrated experience assessing stakeholder needs, expectations and priorities to help develop programs and manage community partnerships.
● Ability to work and communicate effectively with University faculty, staff, and students, as well as with community stakeholders, particularly leaders and rank and file members of unions and other worker organizations.
● Ability to develop and oversee research projects with students and stakeholders.
● Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Strong facilitation and collaboration skills.
● Ability to interact with a diverse population and engage diverse constituencies.
● Ability to take initiative and manage projects with minimal supervision.
● Demonstrated ability to lead a team to implement effectively projects and events.

Appointment
The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

This position provides full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Coordinator of Public Programs salary scale
